Fall 2024

Greetings Greater Texas NAPNAP Members,

It is officially September! Although it may not feel quite like Fall out there just yet, we can at least sip on a pumpkin flavored coffee and burn out fall scented candles as we long for cooler temperatures here in Texas. This newsletter kicks off a new year for the Greater Texas NAPNAP Chapter. As we owe a huge thank you to our past president, Ashlyn Coenraad, for all the hard work she demonstrated serving out chapter over the past year, we also wish a warm welcome to our new president Joyce Henry. If you attended our Pharmville Conference last fall, Joyce was one of the Co-Chairs who organized that great event.

If you are new to this chapter, or just have not been as involved as you would like, know there are lots of great things going on behind the scenes. This year, we are able to make two sizeable donations to the YMCA SAW program in both the Dallas and Fort Worth locations. You will be able to read more about that in the article below.

With Texas continuing to work towards less restrictions for nurse practitioners, please keep an eye out for legislative updates from our Legislative Chair, Cathy Lux. Cathy, along with several others in our chapter, are working on making our presence as nurse practitioners known in the political realm of Texas government.

There are several dates to keep in mind as you look through the Fall newsletter, but there will be more opportunities in the upcoming months for education and networking as our board works diligently to plan this years chapter events. I hope this September 1st brings you a sense of hope and renewed encouragement as we get closer to Autumn colors and cooler temps.

Warmest regards,

Lindsey N. Clark, DNP, APRN, CPNP-PC

This chapter is also a great place for students to get involved early and begin networking before they ever start independent practice. The Greater Texas Chapter advocates for advanced practice providers serving the pediatric population in our state, provides continuing education opportunities for members and organizes several community service projects throughout the year. Any students interested in learning how they can get involved are encouraged contact us using the link below.

A PLACE FOR POSITIVITY

What is Safety Around Water?

Safety Around Water (SAW) is a program through the YMCA and is the first step in equipping children with essential water safety skills, featuring eight 30-minute sessions that teach children and adults what to do if they find themselves in water accidentally. Here are some features that help set these sessions apart from traditional swim lessons:

  • Exercises to help kids adjust to being in the water
  • Instruction to skill sets such as: “Jump, Push, Turn, Grab” and “Swim, Float, Swim”
  • Safety topics like what to do if you see someone in the water who needs help
  • Fun activities that reinforce skills

Who is SAW for?

Safety Around Water is FREE to participants in our partner apartment complexes. It is open to anyone in the community who wants their children (ages 3+) to learn how to be safe in and around water. Adult non-swimmers and beginners are welcome too!

The Greater Texas Chapter of NAPNAP is donating a total of $2,000 split between to two separate locations in the DFW area for the YMCA Safety Around Water (SAW) program so that more children will have access to these potentially life saving skills.
