| | | H&A Sustainability Report Recap | | Herbalist & Alchemist released our annual Sustainability Report which shows that the company has once again exceeded high benchmarks. This report recaps sustainability progress made in 2024, with prioritization of the company’s intensive Zero Waste program, sustainable sourcing initiative, and multi-scope emissions accounting. | | Practitioner-Only Product Has New Name | | | | Eli Jones Compound Syrup of Scrophularia's new name is Eli Jones Alterative (This product is sold only to qualified practitioners). David Winston describes an alterative herb as a substance that produces a gradual beneficial change in the body by improving the body’s processes of eliminating metabolic wastes via two or more of the major eliminatory organs (lungs, lymph, skin, kidney, liver, and large intestines). This decreases the metabolic load and improves the body's natural ability to heal and function in a healthy manner. It’s a lesser-known category of herbs that David has always been committed to making. | | |
Additional H&A formulas in the Alterative category include
Alterative Compound, Burdock / Red Root Compound, and
Scudder’s Alterative (Practitioner only).

| | Thank you State of New Jersey | | The State of New Jersey has awarded H&A a grant to help with the cost of remodeling our building! We revamped a former supermarket that had been closed and empty for decades, revitalizing a dormant corner of Warren Plaza shopping center. The new location allows us to increase production capacity, and the larger building also accommodates a retail store with room for educational presentations. These free sessions, on a variety of health-related topics, are drawing more local people every month. It’s fantastic to connect with the community so directly! | | David discusses peri-menopause & menopause in our latest blog post... | | | | |
Every woman has differing factors that play a role in their health, including genetics, lifestyle, diet, stress, and environmental exposures. You’ve very likely heard me say that working with the person, rather than the condition, will almost always achieve the best results. This is also true when addressing peri-menopausal and menopausal symptomology. There is not one herb or supplement that effectively supports every change individual women experience throughout this stage in life.
| | David Winston Students: Where are they Now? | | MOTMOT COLLECTIVE is a woman-owned small business committed to celebrating the plants and bees. Michele Crosta is an herbalist and passionate environmental advocate. She studied 3 years under herbalist David Winston. In addition to her herbal pursuits, Michele teaches yoga, sharing her knowledge of holistic wellness with others. Driven by a deeply rooted connection to nature, her work blends herbalism, environmental stewardship, community engagement, and yoga as earth-based movement, forging a heartfelt connection with our inner compass. | | | Support the American Herbalist Guild | | |
David has a specific request of you: please help restore the American Herbalists Guild.
In the short term, AHG is fighting for survival. The American Herbalists Guild (AHG) is the only US organization dedicated to the interests of clinical herbalists, creating professionalism in herbal practice, and working to protect the rights of all people to use medicinal herbs. David Winston, RH(AHG) was one of the founders and is now part of a newly elected group dedicated to setting AHG back on course.
BONUS: AHG active Members receive a discount on full line of H&A products. RH memberships are eligible for wholesale accounts.
If you have never been a member of the AHG, please join as a general member. Lapsed members, please renew your membership.

AHVMA Annual Conference - September 6-9, 2025
David Winston was the Veterinary Botanical Medicine Association featured speaker at this year’s conference; he taught classes on three separate topics: Alteratives, Adaptogens, and Autoimmune Issues as well as taking AHVMA attendees on an informative journey in Pans Garden, Florida’s first all-native botanical garden.
| | | | Beth Lambert reported: “AHVMA was a wonderful opportunity to connect with old and new friends. A welcome development we observed is that vets are no longer sidetracked by CBD and are once again interested in learning about the other herbs. We’re also seeing more vets who have sold their animal hospitals opening smaller wellness-focused practices that don’t involve surgery, and even more considering it. These vets are interested in incorporating more herbs into their practice, and attend AHVMA seeking to learn more.” | | |
Botanical Congress - September 16-17, 2025
Beth Lambert represented H&A at AHPA’S Botanical Conference – Back to Our Roots – in Cincinnati in September. Dr Cara Welch, Director of the Office of Dietary Supplement Programs at the FDA, discussed current agency priorities, resourcing shifts, new technologies and how those changes will impact our industry. The knowledgeable Diana Ray, from Natural Marketing Institute, gave an overview of what the marketplace is looking for in botanicals. There were several interesting panel discussions on supply chain tech developments from greenhouses to AI robot weeders, keeping the craft in wild crafting, current industry growth, and supply chain challenges (AKA tariffs), and various approaches to clinical trials.
Our good friend and Southeast herb supplier, Ed Fletcher, was awarded the first Michael McGuffin Extraordinary Service Award for his work in North Carolina during the 2024 floods. After the first day spent discussing industry issues, “Field” Day featured two great outings: a lecture and special exhibit at the Lloyd library and an herb walk at the Cincinnati Civic Garden Center led by knowledgeable local naturalists and herbalists. The Congress was two great days to learn, recharge, and connect with industry friends, many of whom had stayed on in Cincinnati after the International Herb Symposium, including a graduate of David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies, the wonderful herbalist Sajah Popham.

17th Annual International Herb Symposium - Sept 12-14, 2025
| | National Sales Manager Nicole Smith shared this recap: This year’s IHS took place in the historic “Queen City,” Cincinnati, Ohio, drawing herbalists, healers, and people from all walks of life. The theme, “Eclectic Medicine,” was perfectly matched to the location with the renowned Lloyd Library showcasing rare materials from the Lloyd brothers, pioneers of “Specific Medicines” used by Eclectic physicians. | |
| |
David Winston’s lecture, “Simple Remedies to Specific Medicines, the Path from Thomson to the Physiomedicalists and the Eclectics” traced the evolution of American herbalism. His herb walk at the United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary was a crowd favorite. And I had wonderful conversations with the herbalists who visited the H&A booth.
From inspiring talks to the lively Herbal Get-Down dance party, the Symposium was a joyful, well-attended celebration of herbal wisdom and community – a truly fun-filled weekend.
| | Beth was interviewed by Danielle Masterson for a wonderful article she wrote about Women Driving Sustainability. | | David was one of the experts interviewed for an article on Children’s wellness. | | |
Beth was pleased to be one of the people lauding Roy Upton for his substantial work in developing monographs on herbs in this article marking the
30th Anniversary of the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia.
