One Health Institute Updates

Fall Semester 2025

CSU One Health Institute

Note from our Director

Dear One Health friends, colleagues and students,

Welcome to the fall semester! How did summer come and go so quickly? I hope you all were able to get outdoors and enjoy doing the other things you love. We are looking forward to the fall and are pleased to share some One Health updates and opportunities with you.

First, we have two upcoming events we hope you can join us for – our annual Fall Affiliate event and One Health Day celebration.

We are also excited to enter our second year offering the Graduate Certificate in One Health in partnership with the CSU Graduate Program in Public Health. We would also like to announce an opportunity for medical students to apply for the Dr. G. William and Linda Orr Medical Student Award. Please look for more details on these and other student opportunities in our fall newsletter.

Earlier this month, we were pleased to help organize and participate in the second annual meeting of the North America One Health University Network (NAOHUN). You may remember that we convened the first meeting at CSU last August. Over the past year, NAOHUN has grown to include more than 80 universities across Canada, the United States and Mexico with more than 400 participants from academia, government, industry and the private sector. Read more about this year’s meeting below hosted by North Carolina State University’s Global One Health Academy.

Thank you for your engagement and collaboration in One Health! I look forward to seeing you all throughout the fall and wish you a wonderful semester ahead.

Best,

Tracey Goldstein, Ph.D.

Graduate Certificate in One Health prepares professionals to solve global health challenges

One Health in Communities Class on their final presentation day, May 2024. Certificate participants Delaney Worthington (pictured center) and Sami Ullah Khan Bahdur (pictured far right) share how the Graduate Certificate in One Health is preparing them for careers in science and public health.

The Graduate Certificate in One Health welcomed the first students in Fall 2025 and we look forward to increasing enrollment and interest in the certificate in Fall 2026.

At Colorado State University, the Graduate Certificate in One Health is preparing professionals to work across disciplines on some of the world’s most pressing problems.

Offered through CSU’s Graduate Program in Public Health in partnership with the One Health Institute, the certificate gives participants the tools to collaborate effectively, communicate across sectors, and design solutions grounded in science and community engagement. To highlight how the certificate is preparing participants for careers in One Health, we recently sat down with our first two certificate participants.

Sami Ullah Khan Bahadur and Delaney Worthington say the program has broadened their perspectives — from actively addressing antimicrobial resistance to strengthening research impact through science communication. The certificate emphasizes collaboration, systems thinking, and provides hands-on, real-world application.

The Graduate Certificate in One Health is open to graduate and professional students from any college, as well as CSU employees with an undergraduate degree from an accredited university. It can be completed in as little as 12 months and does not require a science background.

Scientists share novel research approaches to chronic disease causes and treatments: CCTSI holds its 13th Annual CU-CSU Summit

At this year’s CU–CSU Summit hosted by the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CCTSI), researchers came together at CSU Spur in Denver to share new approaches to understanding and treating chronic disease.

A variety of CSU researchers presented their research at the Summit, with several using natural animal models to inform approaches to human chronic disease. Julie Moreno, Ph.D., shared research on the use of a guinea pig model to understand age-related neuroinflammatory mechanisms. Similarly, Tracy Webb, DVM, Ph.D., FNAP, presented on using domestic pets as natural animal models to identify solutions to human chronic diseases. An additional animal model approach, presented by Dan Regan, DVM, highlighted how novel immunotherapy treatments identified in golden retrievers can identify treatments for Osteosarcoma in humans.

CSU presentations continued with Sam Winston, a Ph.D. candidate in the College of Engineering, who shared his research on the development of immune instructive hydrogels that stimulate quicker healing in rotator cuff injuries. Tim Stahley, director of the Northeast Regional Engagement Center, shared approaches to building capacity for aging programming and research in Northeast Colorado.

The Summit featured a variety of other experts and underscored how partnerships across CSU, CU Boulder, and CU Anschutz are driving solutions to some of today’s most pressing health challenges.

BROADN researchers use drone technology to advance biological discovery of the atmosphere

The Biology Integration Institute Regional OneHealth Aerobiome Discovery Network, or BROADN, is a center lead by CSU funded by the National Science Foundation and works to advance biological discovery and understanding of the microbes in the air around us. BROADN includes faculty, students and staff working across Colorado State University, CSU-Pueblo, Doane University, and University of Colorado Boulder.

BROADN researchers employ unique air sampling methods, such as attaching a SASS high-efficiency dry air sampler to a drone, to collect and analyze microscopic organisms that exist in the air at difficult sampling altitudes. Our video demonstrates how BROADN researchers are collaborating with CSU's Drone Center to achieve continuous air sampling at 100 meters.

2nd Annual Meeting of the North America One Health University Network

Last August, the North America One Health University Network (NAOHUN) gathered at Colorado State University for the inaugural meeting of universities with One Health programming for collaboration. Since its inception in 2024, the Network has grown to include representatives from 87 universities and over 400 members in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This September, NAOHUN gathered virtually for its second annual meeting.

This year the meeting was hosted by the Global One Health Academy at North Carolina State University. The Network’s second strategic planning and organizational meeting on Sept. 4 and 5 welcomed over 170 individuals from 51 universities across Canada, the United States and Mexico and 18 partners from government, industry and others to share One Health success stories and ideas for future collaboration across North America.

Network efforts for continued integration across North America will continue with the goal of linking together universities across the continent to advance One Health research, education, service, outreach, policy, and advocacy.
