More Than Blue Documentary Screening

followed by a Panel Discussion with:

Heather O'Brien, LICSW, Documentary Group Facilitator

Veronica Greene, Documentary Group Participant

Emily Fiorini, LMHC, Current Postpartum Group Facilitator

Kaitlin Richer, Certified Nurse Midwife, CLC

Join us for a special screening of “More Than Blue,” a powerful documentary produced by Dr. Lee Cohen, Director of the Center for Women’s Mental Health at Mass. General Hospital.

More Than Blue is the first major documentary on postpartum depression, featuring voices from First Connections’ Emotional Wellbeing After Baby Support Group, including facilitators and parents. The film shines a light on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, sharing the authentic stories of families navigating these often-unseen challenges. Through a blend of expert insight and deeply personal experiences, the film works to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and emphasize the vital importance of comprehensive mental health care during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Playgroup/Caregiver Book Discussion Group

Families with children ages 2-5

Wednesdays, Sept. 30 thru Nov. 18, 1:00-2:30 pm

Held at First Connections, Acton

In this combination playgroup and adult book discussion group, the children will play in our playroom while the adults discuss the book "Tiny Humans, Big Emotions: How to Navigate Tantrums, Meltdowns, and Defiance to Raise Emotionally Intelligent Children." We will read sections of the book each week between meetings, and when we meet, we'll share our reactions to it and parenting challenges--and successes. Caregivers will have the chance to get support and ideas from peers going through the same phase of life, as well as from Ellie Springer, M.Ed., longtime First Connections playgroup facilitator, who has over 25 years of experience in early childhood education.

Free copy of the book included. Infant siblings welcome.

There are so many additional opportunities throughout each day that can increase communication and understanding around language. Please join us for an informative live webinar with a Pediatric Speech & Language Pathologist from Emerson Health who will share strategies to help make playtime and everyday activities, such as dressing and mealtime - perfect opportunities for stimulating speech and language. We will highlight the typical speech and language milestones for children, and review when a more formal evaluation might be useful. Register for the Zoom link by emailing lmatthews@jri.org

Pick Your Battles:

Discipline for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Thursday, November 19, 7:00 pm

Held at Village Nursery School, Harvard

Young children thrive when they have clear & consistent boundaries, when they know what to expect from their caregivers, and when they know the adults are in control. But their developing brains drive them to seek control and power, so they are constantly pushing the boundaries we set for them. In this presentation, Emilie Staiger and Maureen Bajko from Village Nursery School and First Connections' own Ms. Ellie will talk about how to decide whether a battle is worth fighting, when to give your child some control, when and how to set a limit, and what to do when you get that inevitable pushback. To reserve your space, email lmatthews@jri.org

Long-term Perinatal Grief Group Ending

Group facilitator, Katie Stockman, NP, shared that the last meeting of this long-running group through Emerson Health will be Monday, September 14, 7-8:30 p.m. "I've often said that the medical assistants, nurses, midwives and doctors who care for you during and after a loss never forget you or your babies. The same is true for me. Your stories, heartache, resilience and perseverance have touched and changed me. I am so grateful." Dwindling attendance is the reason for discontinuation. Katie invites anyone who would like to say goodbye, share remembrances or receive resources, to join the September group.

Denotes funding for this program provided by Mass. Dept. of Early Education & Care CFCE Grant

First Connections, a division of Justice Resource Institute, is one of 84 Coordinated Family and Community Engagement (CFCE) programs in the state of MA, funded in part by the Department of Early Education and Care and offering regionally specific family support services. Our CFCE funded programs extend to families within our 11-town catchment area including Acton, Bedford, Boxborough, Carlisle, Concord, Hanscom AFB, Harvard, Lincoln, Littleton, Maynard, Sudbury, and Westford. We also rely on the generous support of local partners who help fund these programs and expand the geographic reach of our First Year of Life program. We are grateful for the financial support of Concord Carlisle Foundation, Maynard Community Chest, Nordblom Family Foundation, Emerson Community Benefits Dept, Community Foundation for Metrowest, Acton Congregational Church, Concord Trinitarian Congregational Church and individuals like you. Thank you for your support!
