Friends,
The weather is starting to turn, classes are back in full swing on the Boulevard, and Boston's sports teams are making headlines – business as usual for Fall in New England! Our boys have wasted no time in returning to their studies, service, and passions. The mission of Boston College High School is alive in everything they do. From the classrooms to the practice fields and at service sites around the city they are hard at work becoming Men for Others.
Just a few weeks ago, we received word that the world had lost a very special Man for Others.
Rev. Joseph Bennett, SJ '45
passed to eternal life at the incredible age of 91. Fr. Joe was a holy and humble servant of God, and his service as a Jesuit helped shape young men across the world. Whether at Baghdad College in Iraq during the 1950s, or the decades spent on Morrissey Boulevard, he was a constant reminder that we are always in the holy presence of God.
In celebrating Fr. Bennett's life and mourning his loss, I saw something beautiful. News of his passing reached tens of thousands of people in our community through social media. Hundreds of alumni, faculty, friends, and even students of Baghdad College joined together to share their own stories of Fr. Joe. They shared what made him special, and through the impact he has had on this community - what makes
us
special still to this day. I witnessed the unbroken bond of brotherhood as a dozen young men from the Class of 2019, 79 years after his own, served as pallbearers and laid him to rest. The solidarity of our alumni, and of the global Jesuit network, reminds us:
The mission is alive!

Upcoming Admission Events
|
Fall is a particularly busy season for The Office of Admission. Thousands of young men and their families are in the exciting, and sometimes overwhelming, process of deciding what the course of their education will be. To aid in that task, The Office of Admission is hosting a variety of informational events in the coming weeks. If you, or someone you know, is interested in learning more about BC High we hope you will consider joining us for one of these opportunities!
This community is an incredible place to spend the formative years of adolescence. We hope to welcome as many prospective families on campus as possible to learn what Jesuit education, and our BC High family, is all about. For more information and to register please visit

Lazarus Project Featured on NBC10 Nightly News
|
One of the ministries at BC High that touches me the most deeply is the Lazarus Project. NBC10 Boston captured this ministry last month as our young men laid Ezequiel Mendez to rest.
Mr. Mendez is one of many served by St. Anthony’s Shrine, which covers the cost of funeral and burial expenses for those who struggled with poverty and homelessness in life. BC High students serve as pallbearers and mourners at these services, honoring the lives of people they never knew. For
Lucca Possamai ’19 the ministry is about human connection and the dignity of life even after death, "I want to make sure that Ezequiel is remembered. That his legacy doesn't die and that he wasn't abandoned during his funeral. It's another human being.
Our “Men for Others” learn through the Lazarus Project that in serving others we are served. In celebrating the lives of these forgotten brothers and sisters we draw closer to the radical kinship God wants for us. I am in awe of their composure and fortitude!
Felipe Santos ’19, on his third Lazarus Funeral, summed up the transformative effect, "Through this, I've learned that service is my passion. When I leave BC High, I want to go somewhere I can do the same and continue doing that for a career, or maybe the rest of my life."

News from Around the Catholic Community
|
It was wonderful to attend the Archdiocese of Boston's
8th Annual Celebration of the Priesthood Dinner.
Cardinal
Seán O'Malley
and 1700 guests were in attendance to support The Clergy Health and Retirement Trust. I also caught up with
Rev. Bill Joy '64
who will be receiving the
Paul Hunter '53 Man for Others Award
at our Hall of Fame induction in November.
I was honored when
Cardinal Seán asked me to join the search committee for Superintendant of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Boston.
The Northeast Province of Jesuits acknowledged
Trustee Meg Florentine, Provincial Assistant for Secondary & Pre-Secondary Education for her commitment and lasting impact on our schools. Leaders from across the entire Northeast Province gathered in New York to wish Meg well and thank her for her many years of service to Jesuit education.
Last but not least, on one lovely Sunday at BC High we hosted the Northeast Province and the Jesuit Jubilarians celebrating their service to the Society of Jesus and the Priesthood. The
V. Rev John Cecero, SJ, Provincial presided along with Socius
Rev. Jack Hanwell, SJ ’74.
Rev. Paul Harmon, SJ from Holy Cross preached. It was nice to see Jesuit Superior
Jim Croghan, SJ, John Predmore, SJ, Brother Don Murray, SJ, John Fuller, SJ, Marty Shaughnessy, SJ, Ron Perry, SJ and Pat Nolan, SJ host their Brother Jesuits.
Rev. Joe Parks, SJ, Provincial Assistant for Secondary and Pre-Secondary Schools was also present.
It was a particular blessing to see
Rev. Frank Sullivan, SJ '38 celebrating 80 years in the Society. He even showed me his report cards and awards from BC High. Remarkable!
