Fire Prevention Week
Thank you for your compliance during today’s fire alarm drills!
Living in a communal Residence environment means we are all responsible to keep each other safe. Your quick and calm response during drills helps ensure that in a real emergency, everyone knows exactly what to do.
Let’s keep up the great work and continue making Residence a safe and respectful space for all.

Think Before You Pull
Don't risk it. Pulling a false fire alarm is a criminal offence and can lead to:
-
Expulsion from the university
-
A criminal record
- Legal consequences
When someone pulls a false fire alarm, it sets off a chain reaction that can put lives at risk:
-
Firefighters may assume it’s another false alarm. With repeated false calls, they could let their guard down and walk into a real fire unprepared, putting themselves in serious danger.
-
People stop responding to fire alarms. The more false alarms there are, the more likely your peers are to ignore them, even when there’s a real emergency.
-
It diverts emergency resources. Our Residence buildings are high-capacity and prioritized by local emergency services. That means a false alarm here could delay help to someone else in Kingston who actually needs it. This can cost lives.
Only pull the fire alarm if you see a fire. Pulling a false alarm is never worth the risk. And remember: if you hear the fire alarm, always evacuate.
See last week's newsletter for a refresher on safe evacuation procedures.

Fire Safety Dos and Don'ts

- Call 613 533-3155 on weekdays from 8 am – 4 pm
- Email resfcc@queensu.ca
- Charge your electronic devices on a hard surface

Residence Conduct Corner: KEYS AND LOCKOUTS
As we approach the Fall Break, we wanted to share some helpful information about keys and keeping yourself and your community safe:
- Always lock your room door when you leave your floor and/or building.
- If you are leaving campus during Reading Week, remember your keys when you come back! If you do forget your keys or fob, please contact your Front Desk.
- Report any lost, stolen, or malfunctioning keys or locks to your respective front desk right away.
-
Your keys are assigned to you personally and should not be shared with anyone, nor should you attempt to get copies made. This is a violation of the Residence Contract. See clause 3.14.3
- Keep your residence community safe by ensuring you don’t allow people who do not live in the building to follow you in (ie. tailgating). Propped doors can also put you and your community at risk. Please unprop any exterior doors you notice and report them to your front desk.
