Afternoon KSA
Asthma Knowledge Self-Assessment
The KSA session will offer 8 AAFP Prescribed credits, even if you are not pursuing your maintenance of certification. Looking for a low-cost, time-efficient way to enhance your clinical knowledge, earn continuing medical education credits and gain American Board of Family Medicine certification points? Take advantage of Knowledge Self-Assessment (KSA) study groups. KSAs are focused on evaluating and enhancing your knowledge in a particular topic area common to family medicine.
Each family physician facilitated-KSA is approved for 8 CME credits and 10 ABFM certification points. Over the course of the session, you will take part in group discussions of 60 questions on a given topic and answers are submitted as a group by the MAFP. Following successful completion of the questions, MAFP will report your earned credits to AAFP. AAFP will then report your credits and certification points to ABFM on your behalf.
The Asthma ABFM-developed KSA activity focuses on understanding and identifying the pathogenesis of asthma, diagnosing asthma, managing chronic asthma, recognizing, and managing co-morbidities of asthma, managing exercise-induced asthma, and recognizing and managing complications of asthma therapy.
Presenters include Drs. Lee Greer, Emily Landrum, and John Mitchell.

Mississippi's Delegation Makes an Impact at AAFP Congress of Delegates
The Congress of Delegates of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) met September 23 to 25, 2024 in Phoenix, Arizona. The Congress is the national house of leadership of the AAFP and meets annually to consider resolutions of importance to family physicians from around the country as well as elect its Board of Trustees and other officers of the association, including President-Elect, Speaker, and Vice-Speaker. Mississippi’s delegation included Delegates Drs. Jennifer Gholson of Summit and Luke Lampton of Magnolia and Alternate Delegates Drs. Dustin Gentry of Louisville and Katie Royals of Hattiesburg. Joining them were MAFP president Dr. John Vanderloo of Jackson and MAFP executive director Beth Embry. Also present prominently was Dr. Brent Smith of Greenville, a member of the AAFP Board of Directors. Other MAFP members present were past-AAFP President Dr. Warren Jones of Ridgeland and past-AAFP FamMedPAC Board Chair Dr. Jason Dees of New Albany.
As its tradition, MAFP brought multiple resolutions which received national attention before the Congress of Delegates. Mississippi’s resolution “Advocating Against Prior Authorization for In-person Visits with Family Physicians” received vigorous debate and support, with the Congress voting to refer the issue to its Board of Directors for further research, study, and report back.
The AAFP Congress of Delegates elected Dr. Sarah Nosal of New York, NY to serve as the Academy’s President-Elect. Nosal, past president of the New York AFP, is chief medical information officer and vice president for innovation and optimization at The Institute for Family Health, a network of more than 27 federally qualified health centers in Mid-Hudson, Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn. She is also assistant professor in the Mount Sinai Department of Family Medicine & Community Health, and she shares the role of medical director for the Einstein student-run free clinic. Nosal will be installed as president next fall during the 2025 Congress of Delegates in Anaheim, Calif.
The new President, who was elected President-Elect last year, is Dr. Jen Brull of Fort Collins, Colorado, who expressed an emphasis on rural health during her term. New Board Chair will be past-President Dr. Steven Furr of Jackson, Alabama. Other officers elected were Dr. Russell Kohl of Stillwell, Kansas as Speaker of Congress; Dr. Daron Gersch of Avon, Minnesota as Vice-Speaker; Dr. Shannon Dowler of Marshall, North Carolina as Director; Dr. Elisabeth Mock of Bangor, Maine as Director; and Dr. Kathleen Mueller of Windsor, Connecticut as Director.

Miss Mississippi and MAFP on the Move
Earlier this month, 2024 Miss Mississippi, Becky Williams, visited Madison Ridgeland Academy and Canton Academy. During these visits, more than 125 students pledged to say NO to tobacco. MAFP Board Member, Dr. Patrick Whipple, was able to join her for these presentations and said, "Miss Mississippi was fantastic! She was very interactive with the kids, and they loved every minute of it. Her message and delivery were a one-two punch against tobacco!” We are thankful for champions like Miss Mississippi and Dr. Whipple who take the time to educate the children of Mississippi on the harmful effects of tobacco so that they can live healthier lives.
If your children's school would like a visit from Miss Mississippi, have them visit the Miss Mississippi website for booking.
