by Kate Bailey, Policy & Research Director, Eco-Cycle
Following massive upheaval and unparalleled struggles over the past three years, the recycling industry is now attracting unprecedented investments to rebuild and expand recycling in the U.S.. New funding, policies, and partners are coming together to help transform recycling from a waste management strategy to a key foundation of a circular economy. PPE Disposal and Sustainable Options
With protective measures being taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19, you may have noticed an increase of discarded personal protective equipment (PPE) littering sidewalks, parking lots, and streets. If just 1 in 10 Nebraskans littered one piece of PPE, there would be nearly 200,000 masks or gloves in our environment. Beyond the adverse environmental impacts of this litter, cleaning it up is a public health concern. Don't let that stop you from picking it up, but review these guidelines from Keep America Beautiful's report on Litter Cleanup in a COVID-19 Environment for safety information.
The only way to properly dispose of masks and gloves is in the trash. PPE in the recycling stream harms machinery and poses a risk to employees within the facility. Additionally, Keep America Beautiful President and CEO, Helen Lowman, warns that if you or someone in your home has tested positive for COVID-19, do not recycle your recyclables; place them in a bag that is securely closed and discard them in your trash container.
As opposed to single use, disposable masks, a great alternative is a cloth mask that you can wear over and over again. NRC encourages you to purchase sustainably made masks - 14 Sustainable Mask Brands - or to upcycle your own. The CDC has resources on how to make your own mask and how to clean and remove them along with many other tips. Check out these mask resources.

Southeast Nebraska Hub & Spoke Update
For three years, NRC has been working throughout Nebraska reviewing access to recycling and resource management for rural communities and determining potential for increased recycling access through hub and spoke models. With a grant from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, NRC has developed a report of current services and identified areas of potential to increase recycling resources. This year, NRC worked with municipalities in 20 counties in the southeast region speaking with municipal officials on their current strengths and challenges.
Please read through the attached report for our findings. Recycling in the region is changing at a rapid pace and we are updating information as it is reported to us. We look forward to continuing our work in this region, sharing best practices, and strategizing with communities on improving and increasing recycling access and infrastructure.

Did you know that monofilament and fluorocarbon fishing line is recyclable? Discarded fishing line in the environment can cause problems for wildlife, anglers, and boaters, so it's important to recycle and dispose of your line responsibly. For more information about the types of line and what to do with it, go here. The great news for Nebraskans is that the Nebraska Fish & Game Association has installed bins for recycling fishing line all around the state! Check out the map of line recycling bins to find one near you.
