A Place for Girls
GSME’s A Place for Girls (APFG) is a
staff-led after-school enrichment program for girls who may not otherwise have access to Girl Scouting. Since 2007, our Lewiston APFG troop has met at the Hillview housing community.
This summer, we focused on reengaging girls ages 13–15—many involved since third grade—whose attendance had slipped, to show that Girl Scouts has something for everyone.
Together, we planned age-appropriate outings to local attractions. Mini golf, movies, and restaurants were easy yeses; pottery painting felt unfamiliar. With encouragement, they tried it—and lit up. At the studio, they asked the owner thoughtful questions, listened closely, and dove into their projects. Each created something for herself or a loved one and reflected on the pride of trying something new, challenging themselves, and working as a team.
Together, we set a plan to meet monthly during the school year to plan and budget for a bigger field trip next summer.
