Teachers & Families, enjoy great outdoor learning activities with the kids this semester.

Bat Walk

Join us Thursday, September 10th for our popular Bat Walk partnered with the Nevada Department of Wildlife!

This event begins at Cottonwood Park at 6:15 pm where we will learn some bat biology, and then we'll take a twilight walk up the Truckee River to watch one of Nevada’s largest bat colonies emerge at the McCarran bridge. This tour is great for all ages and knowledge levels as it is one of the most marvelous natural wildlife displays in our area. The walk is paved the whole way, and the distance to the bridge and back to the park is about a mile total.

More About Bats

(and the answer to the trivia question!)

from Great Basin National Park's "Explore the Great Basin" teacher resources.

You'll find the answer to the trivia question about smallest and largest bats in this teaching resource, and the largest one is pictured here.

"Bat & Moth" is a long-time favorite student activity that kids always enjoy during our twilight hikes on nocturnal animal adaptations at spring and fall Tahoe Science Camp. It's explained in this resource from Great Basin National Park. To make it a voiceless activity, we've adapted and use shakers for sound rather than calling out "bat" or "moth".

Make a Difference for Kids

Help connect kids with nature, science, and one another.

Every child deserves the opportunity to connect with nature, but many children have limited access to outdoor learning opportunities due to financial constraints. With support from friends like you and private foundations, Great Basin Outdoor School is able to offer program fee reductions and scholarships to include more children.

Our Hearts are Hurting as we think of those affected by recent fires, and we can't emphasize enough the importance of being cautious about each and every thing that could produce a spark in our dry desert environment and being prepared with defensible space around our homes, evacuation bags and plans, and respecting burn bans. Thank you to our firefighters and other first responders.
