October Maintenance Guidelines 
  • Pre-emerge with Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper containing dimension or ferti-lome's For All Seasons II.
  • Illuminate and enhance your home's landscaping with commercial outdoor lighting.
  • Apply ferti-lome's Tree & Shrub Systemic Insect Drench.
  • Plant container-grown trees anytime this month.
  • Plant ball & burlap (B & B) trees when they begin to go dormant.
  • Plant shrubs to help root establishment prior to winter.
  • Choose from our many varieties of flowering bulbs and store in a cool or refrigerated place for November and December planting.
  • Plant pansies, kale, and cabbage. Don't forget to use blood meal fertilizer or Marcum's Nursery Pansy Max for better blooms!
  • Dig and store tender bulbs and tubers in a cool dry place.
  • By mid-month, fertilize cool season lawns.
  • Seed fescue or rye grass as needed in shady areas through mid-October.
  • Continue mowing cool-season grasses or mow with mulching mower.
  • October is an excellent time to control broadleaf weeds in well established warm or cool-season lawns with ferti-lome Weed Free Zone. NOTE: Don't apply to seedling fescue.
  • Mow and edge neatly before frost.
  • Clean up marginal water garden plants after first frost kills the tops.
  • Place nets over the top of water gardens to prevent leaves from falling in the water.
  • Remove diseased plant material from the landscape to reduce disease problems next year.

Plant Bulbs This Fall for Spring Blooms!

You'll need:
1. An assortment of spring blooming bulbs (daffodils, tulips,  paperwhites, 
crocus, and hyacinths are some of our favorites!)
2. Bulb planter

1. Come visit any Marcum's location to select your spring blooming bulbs!
2. Find a location in your garden and get to planting!
3. Now wait for spring...m ost spring-blooming bulbs need to experience a cold treatment so they must be planted in mid to late fall to ensure a spring bloom.
4. Once spring arrives, your family will be excited to these bright, cheery flowers signaling the end of winter and the return of warmer weather.
