Standards Before Feelings

Performance, Accountability & the Culture You Create

Managing people gets complicated when expectations aren't clear, feedback is avoided, or different employees require different approaches.

In this interactive session, Carla breaks down the everyday leadership decisions that shape how a team performs and, ultimately, the culture of the workplace. Leaders will explore how to set and communicate clear standards, address issues before they grow, give constructive feedback, and recognize when an employee needs coaching versus accountability.

The session also looks at the realities of managing different personalities, generations, and levels of experience — adapting how you lead without lowering or changing the standard.

Participants will leave with practical approaches they can use immediately to have better conversations, create stronger accountability, and build a team that knows what's expected of them.

Please note: CGSA CECs will be available for this session, application in progress for GCSAA Education Points.

Meet the Speaker

Carla Bailey

HR & Workforce Strategist | Speaker | Co-Founder of Women in Landscaping

Carla Bailey is an HR and workforce strategist with more than a decade of experience in the landscape industry. As the founder of Solutions by CB, Carla works with various green industry business owners to solve the people challenges that directly affect their businesses — from employment practices and workforce planning to recruitment, retention, leadership development and seasonal workforce strategy.

Before launching Solutions by CB, Carla led the HR function for a large independent landscape company, giving her firsthand experience with the realities of managing people in a seasonal, operationally demanding industry. Today, she combines that experience with her extensive involvement in the industry, including Landscape Ontario and the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA). She is also the co-founder of Women in Landscaping, an initiative created to welcome, support and advance women across the profession.

Carla is a frequent speaker at Landscape Ontario events and industry conferences, speaking primarily to landscape business owners and leaders about HR and workforce strategy. Her sessions tackle the issues employers are actually dealing with — finding and keeping good people, managing difficult employee situations, developing stronger leaders, navigating seasonal employment, and building practical people systems that support business growth.

Known for a practical, personable and straightforward approach, Carla makes complicated HR issues easier to understand and, more importantly, easier to act on. Her goal is simple: give business owners useful strategies they can take back to their companies and put to work.
