Giving Wings to Cross-Border Waterfowl Conservation

Welcome Message

The anticipation is building. When will we see the first migrating teal? It won’t be long and we’ll soon be experiencing “Fall Flights!”

This year, the USFWS Waterfowl Status Report indicated duck numbers in the traditional survey area were 5% higher than 2023, but still 4% below the long-term average. Mallard numbers were similar to 2023, but 16% below the long-term average. Given the continued pressures on the landscape it is hard to imagine how much lower these numbers would have been without our shared efforts in waterfowl conservation.

Take time this fall to enjoy the marvel of migration. As you do, pause for a moment and reflect on what all those before us have done to ensure fall flights, what we have accomplished together, and what we have yet to do to ensure our children and grandchildren can look skyward each fall and experience the awe and wonder of migration.

Cheers,

Why Does Fall Flights Invest in Canada?

Do you ever get asked why U.S. states send money to Canada? Here is a one sentence response:

To ensure future generations have the opportunity to witness the marvel of migration in the U.S., home to about 90% of North America's waterfowl hunters, we must tackle the bottleneck in waterfowl population growth that occurs during the breeding season in Canada, where two-thirds of North American ducks nest.
