Giving Wings to Cross-Border Waterfowl Conservation

Welcome Message

I am excited to introduce the 5th edition of the Fall Flights Newsline and to invite you to visit Canada to see the conservation benefits of our collective habitat investments.

The extensive and varied landscapes across Canada are ecologically distinct regions with critical breeding, migration, and non-breeding habitats for hundreds of bird species, with considerable potential for contributing to national and global biodiversity goals. Canadian provincial governments work collaboratively with our federal and non-government partners through Habitat Joint Ventures to achieve these goals.

Our network of Joint Venture partners plan and implement projects in target areas, identified based on a science foundation, to address priority bird species and their habitats. Investments through the Fall Flights program, matched by partners and the North American Wetland Conservation Act (NAWCA), are directed toward the best habitat for waterfowl and other priority bird species. These critical investments “set the table” for remarkable fall flights each year.

To see firsthand how Fall Flights “Gives Wings to Cross-Border Waterfowl Conservation” visit our distinct and incredibly productive Canadian waterfowl habitats. I invite you to tour our landscapes north of the border and learn about the amazing potential for protecting habitat for species that migrate through, or winter in your state.

Cheers,

Boost Your State’s Fall Flights Investments with These Three Key Strategies

1) Share the Word with a Compelling Rationale

Share this concise two-page rationale for investing in Canada to build awareness and support for your efforts.

2) Showcase the Benefits to Your Constituents

Highlight how your investments are contributing to larger “Fall Flights.” The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission produced an excellent video, originally aired on their popular TV show, Arkansas Wildlife, that illustrates this beautifully.

3) Experience Canada’s Conservation Efforts Firsthand.

Arrange a trip to Canada to witness how your state’s investments are being used to conserve valuable habitats for waterfowl and other migratory birds. Many states have reported that sending a contingent - including commissioners, staff, and even key advocates – is what got them over the hurdle to invest more in Fall Flights.

This past spring, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) hosted contingents from Minnesota and Arkansas. Louisiana toured with Delta Waterfowl and Manitoba Habitat Conservancy (MHC) and then with DUC.
