Giving Wings to Cross-Border Waterfowl Conservation

Welcome Message

Reflect for a moment on what we’ve accomplished together through Fall Flights: wetlands and grasslands teeming with life, abundant waterfowl populations, hunters and wildlife watchers alike, inspired by the awe and wonder of migrations.

Now, let’s look ahead. The deadline for completing our State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) updates is fast approaching. Our SWAPs offer a unique opportunity to highlight the benefits our Fall Flights investments provide for many migratory bird species. As your state works on completing your SWAP, consider taking two steps:

  1. Incorporate migratory bird species that breed in Canada and migrate into or through your state in your State Wildlife Action Plans (SWAP).
  2. Highlight Fall Flights in your SWAP to demonstrate your commitment to full annual-cycle bird conservation through investments in this partnership.

By working together, we ensure that future generations will experience the wonder of migration—not just for waterfowl but also for the many other species of migratory birds that share their habitats. Habitat conservation is at the core of the Fall Flights program, and we know that habitat is the tide that helps float all boats for a wide range of wildlife species.

Sharing the Marsh: Waterfowl & Shorebird Connections

A quick glance across a marsh might draw your eyes to the striking presence of ducks and geese while the subtle beauty of shorebirds escapes notice. The same can be said in conservation – as our attention tends to gravitate towards waterfowl, shorebirds are often overlooked. Yet these feathered globe-trotters need our attention too! The great news? Fall Flights supports conservation for both waterfowl AND shorebirds!

New Maps Depict Importance of Fall Flights for Shorebirds

Thanks to the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center’s Shorebird Science and Conservation Collective, we now have a new series of maps to highlight the role your state is playing in shorebird conservation through investments in Fall Flights- see Map 1 for example shorebird migration paths linking waterfowl priority areas in Canada to U.S. states investing Fall Flights dollars to Canada.
