Giving Wings to Cross-Border Waterfowl Conservation

Welcome Message

Fall migration is underway! You’re probably thinking ducks, no, I’m talking shorebirds!

When I see them along the coast of Maine, I imagine the landscapes where they nest in the Arctic, winter in the southern hemisphere, and the challenges they face along the way. Thirty-four of the 52 shorebird species found in North America are on the Partners in Flight Watch List and/or at a tipping point.

To ensure future generations can witness these incredible long-distance travelers, we need to work together and invest in conservation efforts north of the border through Fall Flights and south of the border through Southern Wings. As the Chair of AFWA’s Bird Conservation Committee and a member of the Fall Flights Advisory Committee, I encourage you to include Fall Flights, Southern Wings, and the shorebird species that migrate through your state in your State Wildlife Action Plan.

Cheers,

Judy Camuso

Shorebirds and Waterfowl: Making the Connection

The Fall Flights Team collaborated with the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center’s Shorebird Science and Conservation Collective to address the question – Will state investments in Fall Flights benefit shorebirds as well as waterfowl? Based on telemetry data, the answer is yes! The Prairie Pothole Region is an important stop for shorebirds to refuel as they migrate from the Arctic to the Southern Hemisphere and back each year.

Please contact Candace Stenzel (stenzelc@si.edu), the Shorebird Collective’s Conservation Specialist, to learn more about the migration routes of shorebirds that travel through your state.

Do shorebirds benefit from waterfowl habitat conservation in Canada?

The Shorebird Science and Conservation Collective has offered to help the Fall Flights Team address this question. More than 70 scientists and practitioners have shared their tracking data collected from over 3,300 individuals of more than 35 species. Leveraging this incredible resource of data can help answer our questions. [READ MORE]
