Fall Fun in Massachusetts
Fall foliage, farmers markets, Halloween and new museum exhibits - October is a perfect time to enjoy Massachusetts! As you travel around the Commonwealth this month, please support our small businesses in cities and towns, resort areas, rural villages and farmlands, as well as our museums, visitor attractions and historical sites. October on Martha's Vineyard is as vivid as its autumnal cloak of reds, golds and ochres under cerulean skies. The annual Fall for the Arts initiative offers safe, distanced (or online) art experiences across the island, where a panoply of artists and crafters offer distinctively Vineyard-inspired art, photography, weathervanes, jewelers, alpaca/cashmere sweaters and more from safe open studios. Mohawk Trail Region
Opening October 6, The Clark's first outdoor exhibition Ground/work consists of site-responsive installations by six contemporary artists presented in locations across the pastoral setting of its 140-acre campus. International artists Kelly Akashi, Nairy Baghramian, Jennie C. Jones, Eva LeWitt, Analia Saban, and Haegue Yang were invited to conceive of a response to the Clark's landscape and to be in active dialogue with the natural environment and setting. The Clark is located at 225 South Street in Williamstown.

MetroWest

Halloween Costumes, Cash Prizes, Ghoulish Good Fun. The spell has been cast. This Halloween is going to be a blast for the whole family! It's a Halloween Scavenger Hunt from your car on Saturday, October 24 in the Milford Area Chamber of Commerce ten town area. Firehouse Ignites: Vintage Auction takes place on October 3 starting at noon! Help the Firehouse Center for the Arts in Newburyport as they work to reopen their doors. Cape Ann Artisans Open Studios Tour takes place October 10 & 11. Come explore the artisans exquisite natural surrounding and see the fine art and craft inspired by the scenic North Shore. Plymouth County

Plymouth Center for the Arts presents Art in Bloom 2020, an exhibition in conjunction with the Plymouth Center for the Arts' 53rd Annual Juried Art Show, matching artwork with floral designs. Held Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, October 25 from noon to 4 pm. The exhibition also features Drawing & Pastel, Oil/Acrylic, Watercolor, Sculpture, Mixed Media, Printmaking, Color Photography, B&W Photography and Fine Crafts. In support of healthy community initiatives, a face covering is required. Free admission. Find out more!

Southeastern Mass

Fall River's Battleship Cove boasts the world's largest collection of US Naval vessels! It is home to five National Historic Landmarks: Battleship USS Massachusetts, Destroyer USS Joseph P Kennedy, Jr, the World War II Attack Submarine USS Lionfish, and PT Boats 617 and 796. The centerpiece of the museum is the USS Massachusetts, which arrived in Fall River in June of 1965 after a successful campaign by the wartime crew of "Big Mamie" to save the ship from the scrap yard. Battleship Cove is open to visitors daily from 9 am to 5 pm; social distancing, face masks, and other guidelines are required.

The Berkshires

Pack up the car and head to the Berkshires for the Incredible Naumkeag Pumpkin Show! This year aside from our social distancing precautions and advanced reservation requirement, you will find even more pumpkins, more fun and an expanded schedule! Explore the famous gardens at Naumkeag as they are transformed into a celebration of autumn with over 1,500 jack-o-lanterns, hundreds of mums, pumpkins and countless gourds - most of which were grown right here. Be sure to take time to enjoy some hot cider and other fall treats as you explore.

Greater Merrimack Valley

Lexington Symphony's "On Stage, At Home with Lexington Symphony" is a series of monthly virtual concerts that will be hosted live, broadcast free on LexMedia and available to live stream through their website and YouTube. "On Stage, At Home" programs are a truly unique opportunity for the Symphony audience to enjoy their favorite musicians, young local talent and special guests in more intimate recorded performances, and to interact with some of them in real time by submitting questions to be answered live on air. Programs will premiere once a month through December 2020, with repeat airings on LexMedia and on demand availability at LexingtonSymphony.org.

Franklin County
A breath of fresh air! Ponds, lakes, rivers and streams abound in Franklin County for the serious or recreational fishing enthusiast. Many are stocked with trout and other native species. A Massachusetts fishing license is required and can be obtained from any Town Clerk or from area sporting goods stores. Here's a first-hand account of fly fishing on the Deerfield River. Crisp October days are perfect for apple-picking outings - and what better place to enjoy a fruit-filled orchard adventure than in Johnny Appleseed Country? Farms and orchards welcome visitors for pick-your-own forays, and so much more: Fields of pumpkins, farm stands piled high with vegetables, live music, barbecue lunches, and locally-crafted beers and ciders or maybe a wagon rides around the orchard.
