400 Fruit Trees Distributed:

Growing Richmond's Food Forest & Youth Leadership

Imagine a Richmond brimming with fresh, organically grown fruit! Urban Tilth’s Orchard for ALL! program aims to make this a reality by planting a dispersed community orchard across the Iron Triangle, Santa Fe, and Coronado neighborhoods.

Launched in 2024, this transformative initiative distributes free fruit trees to residents, redistributes excess fruit to families in need, and provides vital support for their care, all while training local youth in sustainable practices.

With an impressive start, including the distribution of 400 trees and over 1,000 pounds of fruit shared, Orchard for ALL is already making waves. Discover how this initiative is fostering community, education, and sustainability—click below to learn more and get involved!

Cheers to our Urban Farming Graduates!

The Rudy Lozito Urban Farming Fellowship program proudly celebrated the graduation of its latest cohort on Friday, October 25th, 2024, at the North Richmond Farm.

Over the past six months, four fellows dedicated themselves to learning sustainable and regenerative farming practices, gaining hands-on experience in organic crop production, soil health, and animal husbandry. Through workshops, field trips, and community-building activities, they deepened their agricultural skills and community connections.

This year’s fellows embody the legacy of Rudy Lozito, each prepared to bring sustainable change and resilience to the community. Read on to learn more about the graduates and this inspiring program.

Introducing Two New Programs!

Beyond the Classroom:

New After School Program for Families

Urban Tilth’s After School at the Farm program invites youth, from preschoolers to fifth graders, to explore nature and learn about environmental stewardship.

Through activities like seed saving, planting, movement games, and caring for farm animals, children develop hands-on skills in environmental stewardship while building lasting connections to their community.

By immersing youth in outdoor activities, we hope to cultivate positive, memorable interactions with nature that will have a ripple effect throughout the community, enriching it with a new generation that values and engages with the natural world.

New Program Cultivates Community and Wellness for Richmond's Senior Community

After launching our Farmers to Families CSA, which delivers free organic produce to over 200 families—nearly half being seniors and disabled residents—we discovered a deeper community need. Many of our senior recipients, living alone, shared how much they miss gardening, yearn for outdoor activities, and long for social connection. In response to these stories, we've developed a dedicated program that reconnects our senior residents with the joy and vitality of cultivating a relationship with nature in community.

50% Complete: Verde School's Garden

Becomes Community Learning Oasis

The Verde Revitalization Project, led by Urban Tilth and funded by the CAL Fire Grant since May 2023, aims to transform the Verde School Partnership Garden, a key green space for North Richmond's only school.

This revitalized garden will feature distinct areas such as a Mediterranean Garden, California Native Plant Garden, Food Forest, and Pollinator Meadow, creating a rich environment for education, community connection, and cultural exchange in a community deeply impacted by poverty and health risks.

With 50% of the project complete and consultations ongoing, Urban Tilth seeks additional funding to fully realize this green space, inviting community support to foster environmental stewardship and local resilience.
