For a school and community that is so steeped in tradition,
Homecoming
is an extremely special time for Glenbard West. Homecoming gives us a chance to honor and celebrate our distinguished alumni as well as showcase the talented students that currently attend Glenbard West. Our Student Council works diligently to plan an exciting and action-packed week for students. This year's Homecoming theme is Hollywood. When walking through the halls you can feel the energy and see the school spirit as students dress for theme days, prepare for the parade, decorate the hallways, and our famous woodchucks build the bonfire. We welcome our alumni back for the weekend's festivities and expect our students to show their overwhelming support at all the events. Throughout Homecoming week Student Council host activities before, after and even during the school day. Each day during lunch periods different hit movies will be playing in the cafeteria. Students will get a chance to see some great cinema ranging from Finding Nemo to Lucas.
Other activities include karaoke, games, a photo booth and a popsicle social after school on Wednesday, October 4th.
One annual event is the Hallway Decorating where various clubs and activities are assigned a section of the school to decorate. During Hallway Decorations each club will help transform the halls of West into the whimsical landscapes from our favorite movies. Additionally, staff judges visit each section and award a club a prize for the most spirited and best decorated.
Students also have spirit days that Student Council plans and organizes. This is a great and easy way for all student to get involved with the Homecoming Festivities. Below are the themes:
Spirit Day: Pajama Day
Tuesday, October 3
Wednesday, October 4
Spirit Day: Beach Day
Thursday, October 5
Spirit Day:
Sports Jersey Day
Friday, October 6
Spirit Day: Glenbard Spirit Day

College Application Information
School Counseling Department
The School Counseling Department is excited to officially kick off the college application season with several events for our upperclassmen. First of all, as of the date of this newsletter, we have 156 college representatives that have scheduled appointments to talk to Glenbard West students. This year we have begun emailing a weekly College Rep Visit Newsletter so check your inbox for those! Please encourage your child to sign up for some colleges of interest through Naviance. These are excellent opportunities for students to not only gather more information on numerous colleges right at
school but also to get a face to face meeting with the admissions representatives for specific colleges in which they may be applying. Also a reminder that the FAFSA application date is only a month away, available October 1st! Financial aid for college is on a first come first serve basis, so the earlier you
file, the
better. There will be several workshops in the District to assist with this process if needed.
For seniors, School Counselors met with all their students on September 6th to review a detailed college application checklist and discuss the steps for requesting transcripts and letters of recommendation through Naviance. In addition, we reviewed the timeframe for admissions testing, essay writing, scholarship applications, and financial aid. Since then, School Counselors have been meeting with Seniors in small groups and/or individually to walk them through the Naviance and Common Application college application process. We encourage all parents of seniors to have a discussion with your child regarding the meetings with their counselor and work with your student on their Naviance account to complete the Parent Input Form in order to share information to be included in letters of recommendation.
For Juniors, counselors are continuing the developmental process of college preparation by visiting English classrooms towards the end of September to work with students on college research and developing their activity resumes in Naviance. In addition, we will host the annual College Night on Wednesday, October 4th beginning at 6:00 p.m., so make sure you save the date! We invite all juniors and their parents to join us as we convene in the auditorium for a welcome prior to dividing into several breakout sessions throughout the building. We will hold three separate sessions with the following five options to choose from; 1) Admission to 2- and 4-year colleges with a senior student panel, 2) Up and Coming Careers, 3) Financial Aid, 4) Naviance Tutorial for Parents, 5) Admission to Highly Selective Colleges with Washington University St. Louis' Senior Director.

If Glenbard West must close for any emergency, you will be contacted by an automated call using the telephone number and/or email address that we have on file in PowerSchool. In addition, there will be announcements on our website and local radio stations may make an announcement.
We will also use our automated calling system for other important announcements during the school year, so it is extremely important that you have the current phone number and/or email address on file in PowerSchool.

We are focused on students' drive, belonging & engagement
As the new school year unfolds, I am so proud of our students, faculty and staff for their hard work. Right from the beginning of the school year they've been digging deep and seeing positive results.
In our classrooms and extracurricular activities, we are focused on the following key areas:
- Instill Student Drive
- Belonging and Connectedness
- Engaged and Inspired
Instill Student Drive
- Growth Mindset
- We are building a growth mindset culture among all students. We continually remind students that they are able to exhibit resiliency, grit and determination. We encourage all students to:
- Learn from constructive criticism
- See their efforts as a path to mastery
- Increased Enrollment in AP
- We continually work to increase the number of under-represented students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) classes. We encourage students to level up to more challenging classes and provide a variety of academic supports to assist them. Since 2015, 174 more under-represented juniors and seniors have experienced the challenges and rigor of AP classes at Glenbard West.
- Partnership with Parents and Guardians
- Parents and guardians play a key role in our students' motivation. I appreciate you working with our teachers and administrators to help students set goals and persevere. When our students see the adults in their lives modeling optimism and hear their personal examples of overcoming challenges, they learn that their drive will lead them to success.
Belonging and Connectedness
Glenbard West's faculty and staff foster a family atmosphere at school and value all students' backgrounds. This is key to making our students feel connected and have a sense of belonging. Let's look at a few key factors:
- Pursuing Passion and Interests
- Glenbard West offers a multitude of clubs, sports, activities and elective classes. Students who participate in these activities feel a greater sense of belonging and connection to their school and, in turn, have greater academic success
- Social and Emotional Learning
- Our highly talented educators use a comprehensive approach to working with students on:
- Self-awareness
- Self-management
- Decision making
- Relationship skills
- Social awareness
- Glenbard Parent Series
- I am proud to work in a school district that has the nationally recognized Glenbard Parent Series. Each month, several events are presented that help parents navigate through a variety of issues related to raising healthy, happy young adults. I encourage you to review the lineup of speakers for this year at glenbardgps.org
Engaged & Inspired
If you sat in on a class at Glenbard West, you would be impressed with how the lesson is dramatically more engaging than what you likely experienced in high school.
- Our teachers are emphasizing thinking skills and incorporating aspects of project-based learning, global connections, and personalization into their lessons.
- Students are involved in deep learning tasks and interactive activities.
I am impressed with students' persistence and willingness to stretch themselves.
Each day, students' drive, belonging & connectedness and engagement & inspiration will shape their motivation and determine their level of success.
