Introduction: Beyond “ABC Guessing”
The PHONICS Road to Spelling and Reading is far more than a standard ABC memorization program. It sets itself apart through its foundation in the Orton-Spalding instructional approach, a proven, multisensory method combining spelling, handwriting, and reading, developed under the guidance of Romalda Spalding and rooted in the work of Dr. Samuel Orton.
Barbara Beers, instrumental in shaping the PHONICS Road curriculum, designed it to be a complete K–4 language arts program, offering instruction in speaking clearly, spelling correctly, writing legibly, and reading fluently, all while laying groundwork for advanced grammar study.
The Core Methodology: Hear-Say-Write-Read®
Central to the PHONICS Road approach is the Hear-Say-Write-Read® cycle, through which students actively engage with over 500 words as they progress through the curriculum. This multisensory method ensures that each word is deeply internalized, not just seen or heard, but spoken, written, and read.
