Ann & Sarah's Monthly "Tricks of the Trade"
PodiatryMeetings.com   was created and co-founded by us - Ann Dosen and Sarah Breymeier. We have spent nearly a decade in the podiatry industry, attending dozens upon dozens of podiatric meetings and trade shows.

We do our best to put our experience to good use!
Below are some helpful "tricks of the trade" from us to you... enjoy!
FOR THE EXHIBITOR
Perception is Reality.

Trade shows - those of us in the industry continue to claim that they’re getting harder and harder, however, we all feel that there is a big risk in not investing dollars in them at all.

After traveling to countless podiatric trade shows over the last ten years for different companies and for myriad of goals, it appears that the experience and the perceived success ( for the most part ) is simply a state of mind.

For example, if you ask around to those of us “veterans” who have been exhibiting for years, the excitement has dwindled and the days seem long; the return on investment just doesn’t seem to be there. However, if you ask a novice, the complete opposite energy and feedback is provided. The new sales reps have positivity, energy, and hope!
Regardless of which side of the coin a podiatric supplier falls, the long and short of it is that a trade show presence is necessary to maintain current business and to acquire new business.

The nature of podiatrists (especially those in private practice), is that they are typically the sole decision-maker of their business. The exceptions are the practices that have empowered practice managers. Even in these cases, the practice manager isn’t going to make a radical change without consulting the physician.  They are the decision makers… and they’re busy. Finding time to read and respond to sales calls and emails is not a part of the daily routine.

Therefore, trade shows give vendors a unique opportunity to not only create awareness, but create interest, and ultimately close a new account. Trade shows are, point-blank, a necessity in the podiatric space.

The difference in what makes a trade show successful from a decade (or more) ago in comparison to today is the communication strategy.   Selling just doesn’t work anymore.

Wait. What? Selling doesn’t work? No – it doesn’t. It is repellent.
Hard selling is the quickest way to find your trade show booth empty, depressing, and a big waste of money.   Instead, education, awareness, and good old-fashioned customer service is where trade show success now lies.

So know your stuff, answer any questions your customers and/or prospects may have and let the relationship take its course. The right matches between physician and supplier always seem to find their way.

FOR THE ATTENDEE
Invest Your Conference Dollars and Time in Your Passion.

There's no way around it - you're going to register for meetings and get your credits. If you take a look at the Meeting Calendar at podiatrymeetings.com , there's no doubt there are SEVERAL that you can choose from.

So how do you choose? What are the factors that force you to say, "that's where I want to invest my education dollars."

You may choose a meeting that's close to home. If you don't need a hotel room because you can commute during the few days... bonus. You may also choose a meeting because it's just the one you've always gone to. But what if saving a few bucks or maintaining tradition keeps you from gaining a truly useful experience?

Ask yourself this...
ARE YOU SELECTING MEETINGS THAT FEED YOUR PASSION?

No matter in what area of work anyone spends their daily lives, it's easy to get stuck in a rut. Luckily, physicians are in a unique position where they are FORCED to continue their education vs. just showing up to work and going through the same motions every day; "doing it the way we've always done it" until retirement. Ultimately, you can turn this obligation into a mandatory reason to become further inspired or re-inspired to grow your skill set and your practice.

You may not even realize that there are niche meetings that can feed your passion, your strengths, and inspire you to create a practice that specializes in the types of patients you want to see every day.
After you've asked yourself if you are selecting meetings that feed your passion, ask a second question... what types of patients do I want to see on a daily basis, and where can I elevate my skill set to be the leading practice in my market?

There are many niche meetings that can help hone the skills you desire to keep both your practice thriving and your brain engaged. A few that come to mind include:

  • AAPSM: Sports Medicine
  • ACFAP: Pediatrics
  • AMIFAS: Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • DERMfoot: Dermatology
  • DFCon: Diabetes

Bottom line, if you're going to invest in something, invest in what will inspire you and will have a greater chance at helping you achieve practice growth.

When I arrive to a meeting, I look forward to takeaways that I can implement immediately in my practice.

This can be a new technology, technique, or procedure. It can also be a pearl that I’ve heard that will add to the efficiency of my practice.

If there are different lecture tracks that I can choose from at a meeting, or if I'm able to review an agenda ahead of time, I generally look for what’s new.

I often scan the program and mark what looks new, innovative, and interesting.

I also look for dynamic lecturers who I have heard before and I can rely on to provide excellent content.

I think some seminars become formulaic and reliant on the old “stand by” lectures. Unfortunately, little in these lectures change from time to time and end up not being able to hold the attention of the room .
I look forward to walking the exhibit hall. Again, I’m looking for new and innovative…things I haven’t seen before.

Having been to meetings for many years, I also look forward to spend time with the reps who I have come to have know.

Interestingly enough, they are also on the lookout for "what’s new" and often steer me in the right direction.
I am a huge fan of the American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management . These seminars have a great combination of CME scientific content along with non-CME practice management and marketing lectures.

The interactivity of these seminars never fail to send me back home with pages of action items to implement.

Dr. Andrew Schneider is a graduate of Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine and completed a comprehensive residency at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in East Orange, NJ. He is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine and a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Texas Podiatric Medical Association. Dr. Schneider assumed the role of medical director of Tanglewood Foot Specialists in 1998.

Dr. Schneider continually attends medical seminars to learn new procedures to benefit his patients. He was one of the first in Houston to use MicroVas therapy to aid in reversing diabetic peripheral neuropathy and heal chronic wounds. He strongly believes that this technology is a key to saving diabetic limbs and maintaining a high quality of life.

When our marketing and sales teams are collaborating to determine which meetings to exhibit at the following factors are the most important to us:

  • Exposure to see our current customers as well as prospects
  • Desired booth location availability
  • Lectures, workshops and speaker opportunities.
  • Is there an option to sponsor a speaker?
  • Is biomechanics included in the lectures?
  • Number of attendees
  • Past feedback on the conference
  • Cost and ROI

The selection of conferences to attend is a difficult task each year. We look for a good fit to meet our objectives and budget each year, which takes time and research.

We start with looking at the many options for the year and if there any new conferences of interest. Then, we look at our history of ROI at the shows we are considering . However, we also consider brand awareness and value of meeting our clients face-to-fac. This is a is a large part of the experience and it's very difficult to measure.

Another consideration is sponsorships . We will be more likely to consider exhibiting if sponsorship opportunities for a workshop or a speaker are reasonable. We look at the expenses of sponsorships, travel and exhibit fees and estimate a cost per lead.

Other questions we ask and then try to research include
  • Will the conference pull attendees locally, from the region or nationally?
  • Does the content of the meeting tracks include biomechanics; does the content of the lectures line up with our products and services?
  • How much time with the attendees have outside of the lecture hall for breaks, lunch and other events?
  • How well was the event was organized for the exhibitors in the past?
  • Is there a way to incorporate other face-to-face meetings with our clients or partners outside the conference?

We also prefer to get feedback from other vendors who have attended to get their opinions on how the conference experience was for them.

Recently we have been looking at website and social media performance around a conference event.

Now we have another resource at www.podiatrymeetings.com for us to reference which has been very helpful with our decision making.
