Spotlight on a Fund
While TSF’s mission is providing scholarship aid to local students, an equally important role we play is remembering and honoring many of our townspeople and local organizations. This is a role that is very meaningful to TSF. The stories behind each of our funds, including those of individuals who gave much to our town and those whose promise was not realized, are a key part of our success. To remember community members, both young and old, families, local groups and businesses in a positive and active way is a significant reason for our accomplishments since 1960 and our continued growth in aiding Wakefield students.

William E. Jones Fund

The William E. Jones Fund was established in June 1983 to honor Bill Jones, an Honorary Director and former president of the Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of Wakefield.

Bill Jones, who retired in 1964 as the business and financial editor of the Boston Globe, provided long and valuable service to CSF (now The Scholarship Foundation of Wakefield.) As CSF's fifth president from 1968-1969, he served on the By-Laws, Business Solicitation, and Annual Art Show fundraiser committees. He was also Chairman of the Awards Committee.

He was a charter member of the National CSF Honor Roll and wrote a history of CSF on the occasion of its 25th Anniversary.

In 1983, he was named "Outstanding Citizen" by the Wakefield Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Mr. Jones contributed to several other community organizations including the Wakefield YMCA, the Congregational Church, the Wakefield Historical Society, the Wakefield High School Building Committee, and the Wakefield Fire Department Auxiliary. He served as a trustee of the Lakeside Cemetery Corporation and was a corporator, trustee and vice president of the Wakefield Savings Bank.

Mr. Jones is one of TSF's renowned "Three Bills," along with Bill Spaulding and Bill Lee (see article below). Each of these individuals made significant and long-standing contributions to the organization.

Bill Jones died in 2003 at the age of 100.

The "Three Bills"

The "Three Bills" were named to the first Dollars of Scholars National Honor Roll in 1982. Celebrating this distinction, from left to right are Pat Mooney, President, CSF of Wakefield;

Joe Phelan, President, CSF of America; Bill Spaulding, Bill Jones, and Bill Lee.

The "three Bills" are revered directors whose contributions during the organization’s early years continue to shape TSF's success.

Bill Lee, a local attorney and founding father of CSF, played a pivotal role in its growth. He served as the organization's second president from 1962 to 1964. In 1990 his numerous contributions to Wakefield were honored with the renaming of the town hall to the William J. Lee Memorial Town Hall.

Bill Jones, a retired business and financial editor of the Boston Globe, was CSF's fifth president, serving from 1968 to 1969. He dedicated many years of tireless service to both the organization and the community.

Bill Spaulding was president of the Wakefield Savings Bank and CSF’s financial vice president for an impressive tenure of 42 years. His exceptional financial leadership and unwavering support left a lasting impact on the organization.
