Together, We're Writing Literacy for Life's Next Chapter

Celebrating our tutors, sharing stories of impact, and inviting our community to help ensure literacy endures in San Luis Obispo County.

Letter From Our CEO

“This is not the end of Literacy for Life — it’s a new chapter.”

— Bernadette Bernardi, CEO

Dear Friends,

At our recent Volunteer Appreciation Event at Four Lanterns Winery, I looked out across a patio full of dedicated tutors and saw something extraordinary — a community that believes in hope, compassion, and the power of education.

For more than 40 years, Literacy for Life has provided free, one-on-one English and literacy tutoring for learners ages 16 and up across San Luis Obispo County. Every lesson — a parent helping a child with homework, a worker reading a schedule, a newcomer greeting a neighbor — represents courage, connection, and possibility.

Now, we face a challenge that calls for that same spirit. After the loss of state funding, we must raise $175,000 by June 2026 to sustain our programs. Without it, hundreds of learners could lose access to the tutoring that empowers them to succeed.

Your generosity, especially during this season of gratitude, can ensure that every learner in our program continues to find their voice and their future through literacy. Wishing you and yours a very happy Thanksgiving!

With gratitude and hope,

Bernadette Bernardi

Event Highlight: A Toast to Our Tutors

What a wonderful evening we shared at Four Lanterns Winery, celebrating the volunteers who make Literacy for Life possible!

Tutors from across San Luis Obispo County gathered for a night of connection, laughter, and gratitude. The setting was beautiful, the stories were inspiring — and the impact was undeniable.

Each year, our volunteer tutors give hundreds of hours to help learners from countries like Japan, Iraq, Ukraine, and Mexico build English skills and confidence. Because of them, learners can talk to teachers, understand doctors, apply for jobs, and connect more deeply with their community.

Tutor Voices

Every week, volunteer tutors across San Luis Obispo County sit down with learners from all walks of life — new residents, working parents, students, and neighbors — helping them strengthen reading, writing, and English-speaking skills.

These are just a few of their stories:

Richard – San Luis Obispo

“It’s hard to believe I’ve been with the same learner for almost ten years! Over time, the line between learner and tutor has blurred — our sessions have become lively discussions about our countries of birth, current events, travel, and baseball. He’s not just my learner anymore — he’s my friend.”

Cynthia – Paso Robles

“Tutoring a motivated adult learner isn’t just gratifying — it’s inspiring. It takes dedication and courage to master a new language. I’m humbled and honored to help guide my learner on this path toward his dreams.”

John and Nu at the Los Osos Library.

Learner Spotlight: Nu

Nu and I have been meeting once a week for 90 minutes at the Los Osos Library to work on English literacy skills. It has been an honor to see his confidence grow as he continues to practice and apply what he’s learning.

Nu shared with me, “My life has changed because now I can communicate in English with people after learning with John.”

He is eager to practice reading, writing, and speaking skills each week. His enthusiasm and kindness make every session enjoyable.

– John, Tutor, Los Osos

Laurie – Los Osos

“I’ve tutored my learner for six years, and watching her develop fluency and pride in her communication skills has been deeply rewarding. Each session reminds me why this work matters.”

Sue – Paso Robles

“It’s truly an honor to meet with my learner and share this literacy journey together. She’s well beyond the basics — now focused on fluency, comprehension, and confidence. Watching her self-edit, persevere, and conquer challenges has been incredibly rewarding. That self-awareness is a life skill, not just a literacy skill.”

Lee – San Luis Obispo

“I tutor because helping others brings me a great deal of joy. Seeing my learner’s progress enhances that joy every time we meet. I helped him prepare for the U.S. citizenship exam — he aced it and is now a proud American citizen.”

✨ Each story represents one of the hundreds of connections happening every week across our county — moments of courage, joy, and newfound confidence.
