Events

National Senior Citizen Appreciation Day - 8/21

While we make it a point to appreciate our members every day of the year, we took this National Senior Citizen Appreciation Day as an opportunity to throw a party for our amazing community of older adults! Our celebrations included a big BBQ lunch, a dance party, and appreciation awards for some of our outstanding long-term members. We also had a ceremony to honor our Nutrition Class graduates, complete with caps and certificates. Thank you to our members for being so amazing and to the staff for putting together this fun celebration!

Together | Apart Exhibit

This past July, our amazing CBN artists had the opportunity to showcase their work at El Barrio's Artspace PS109 in the show Together | Apart. This exhibit highlighted the artwork created during the pandemic by older adults who participate in CBN's Making Art Work program. It featured over 75 textiles, clay works, prints, Chinese painting, cut paper, and mixed media pieces that were completed in 2020-2022 either in-person or remotely through Zoom classes during the COVID crisis.

This exhibition was made possible by a generous grant from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and the New York State Council on the Arts, and donated exhibit space by El Barrio's PS109.

Mural Unveiling

On display at Lehman Village Older Adult Center in East Harlem are three beautiful murals created by our members as part of an exciting project supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Our members collaborated over the past year to create, as our amazing lead community artist Maria de Los Angeles put it, a “celebration of the ecological beauty of our planet, depicting a Kaleidoscopic floral environment with hummingbirds, butterflies and more.” To find out more about how National Endowment for the Arts grants impact individuals and communities, visit www.arts.gov.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day - 6/15/22

This World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, members and staff from our Covello Older Adult Center met at City Hall to raise awareness of the realities of elder abuse.

This amazing event, facilitated by the New York City Department for the Aging, featured a speech from our very own Executive Director William Dionne, along with words from Mayor Eric Adams, Commission Lorraine Cortes-Vazquez, Deputy Commissioner of Community Affairs Mark Stewart, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence Cecile Noel, and Neighborhood SHOPP's Katherine Martinez, all focused on ensuring that NYC’s older adults experiencing elder abuse know that help is within reach. If you or someone you know if experiencing elder abuse, our Community Elder Mistreatment and Abuse Prevention Program (CEMAPP) is here to help. For more information, click here.

Volunteering at CBN

CBN Associates Council

CBN's Associates Council is a group of engaged young professionals dedicated to lending their talents, time and energy to benefit older adults as well as raise critical funds to support CBN's mission. As the organization's next generation of leaders and supporters, the Associates Council serves as advocates for CBN's crucial work combating isolation and loneliness, food insecurity, and serving older, vulnerable New Yorkers.

In-Person Volunteering at CBN

Now that CBN has pivoted back to in-person activities, volunteering at all of our centers has been on the rise! Volunteers have helped us beautify our Roosevelt Island Older Adult Center's garden, serve meals at our Covello and Lehman Older Adult Centers, and have even hosted events to teach our members chess! Thank you to all of our volunteers who make CBN a brighter place. We could not fulfill our mission without our volunteers!

Pledge Volunteer Hours with CBN

This year, in addition to our critical fundraising goal of $500,000, we have set a goal to have 500 volunteer hours pledged during our Campaign (volunteer hours to be fulfilled by 6/30/2023). To pledge volunteer hours for yourself, friends or family, or corporate groupsclick here.

CBN Highlights

Glowing Stars and Covello All Stars

We are proud to highlight our Leonard Covello Older Adult Center's amazing dance groups, the Glowing Stars and Covello All Stars! These CBN groups utilize dancing as a way to exercise and connect with their cultural roots. In addition to performing for our CBN members at events like our National Senior Citizen Day Appreciation and Mother's Day celebrations, our dancers regularly attend community events and festivals throughout East Harlem.

Calligraphy in Mandarin

We are pleased to share that thanks to a generous grant we received from Manhattan Borough President Mark D. Levine's office through the Manhattan Community Award Program, we have been able to continue expanding our culturally-responsive arts programming at our Leonard Covello Older Adult Center. Through amazing instruction offered in Mandarin and English, our participants have learned about and gained skills in Chinese calligraphy, painting, and paper cutting. This well-attended weekly class has celebrated and introduced artistic contributions from Chinese culture to a diverse audience.

Carter Burden Luncheon Club – Upper East Side Older Adult Center – Update

We are excited to announce that after a two year renovation, our Luncheon Club is nearly completed and expected to re-open this fall. We are currently distributing grab and go meals from this location and look forward to our grand re-opening soon. To stay updated on this and other program updates click here.

CBN Fundraising Updates

2022 Fundraising: Fighting Inflation Campaign

Helping to support older adults during this period of rising food costs

For 51 years, Carter Burden Network has been a leader in aging services in NYC. The ongoing repercussions of the pandemic continue to highlight the struggles that older adults face each day – loneliness, isolation, health concerns – and one of the most critical, food insecurity, which has escalated at even faster rates through the inflation that everyone is experiencing. In an effort to direct as much money straight to the work that we have to accomplish this year, we have launched the Carter Burden Network Fighting Inflation Fundraising Campaign to help support older adults during this period of rising food costs.

Our Social Service and Case Management Units serve older adults in East Harlem, the Upper East Side, and Roosevelt Island through individualized services in English, Spanish, Chinese and Korean, including assistance with benefits, entitlements, and referrals to community services. One of our biggest focuses right now is helping older adults get signed up with SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and rent subsidies to help combat rising food and housing costs. At CBN, we have seen our meal cost increase by 23% this past year alone. This critical fundraising effort, which runs thru year-end,  will help us continue to provide nutritious meals and other wraparound supports and basic necessities for older adults in need.

All contributions to the Fighting Inflation Campaign are fully tax-deductible.
