Top Ten Lessons Learned from Running for Office and LOSING!

By  Rachel Michelin, Executive Director/CEO, California Women Lead

On June 3, 2008, across the state, women ran for office at the local, state and national levels. I was one of those local candidates. I threw my hat in the ring and ran for a seat on the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors. While I did not make the run off, I did learn a number of valuable, "first time candidate" lessons that I would like to share.

2019 MOVER Award Nominations Due Nov. 30

California Women Lead is successful today because of the remarkable women (and men) who have left their mark on the organization, leaders who not only believe in our mission, but live it. Our MOVER awards recognize leaders who have and continue to be trailblazers, leaders who not only inspire, but work to help women be successful.

The California Women Lead Board of Directors is accepting nominations for our 2019 "Making our Vision of Equality a Reality" (MOVER) Awards. The MOVER Awards will be presented February 6, 2019 at the California Women Lead Annual Legislative Reception at the Citizen Hotel in downtown Sacramento. The Board will be considering nominations and will announce honorees the first week of January. We ask that anyone who is nominated commits to attending the reception on February 6, 2019 in Sacramento.

Click below for a description of each award and to submit your nomination.

Recipients will be selected by the California Women Lead Board of Directors. Finalists may be contacted for more information. The board reserves the right to change categories of nominees.

All nominees must be a current member of California Women Lead. Nomination deadline -- November 30, 2018.

Congratulations to California Women Lead Members
Running for Office in the 2018 General Election!
"Women have begun to see that if I go through that doorway,

I take everybody through it."

Dianne Feinstein, United States Senator

We are proud of all of our members running for office in November.
Thank you for being an example of leadership.

We wish you the best of luck and look forward to hearing about your success.

Politeness in Politics

With Election Day just a week away, the issue of Politeness in Politics is front and center. Read this CEWAER (now California Women Lead ) newsletter article that is still, if not more, relevant today than it was in 1996, written by Miss Manners (AKA Judith Martin). Former State Senator Dede Alpert's (president of the CEWAER board) message to our membership that same year also still resonates in our political climate today. Click here to read.

Can we bring civility back to politics? Have we gone too far to change the tenor of our political campaigns?
