False Alarm Reduction
As Alarm Administrator at the Barnstable Police Department, I have a detailed perspective of alarm dispatches and B&E occurrences within the Town of Barnstable.
We instituted the False Alarm Reduction Program in 2004 to combat the growing problem of false alarms. To date, the program has been successful in reducing false alarms by 50%. Reducing false alarms frees up patrol officers to respond to real crime events and allows them to be proactive in their community policing efforts.
The national averages of burglar occurrences are on a slight decline, which also mirrors the statistics we have seen locally. In 2010 there were 426 reported burglaries in the Town of Barnstable, and in 2011 there were 357 incidences. Out of that number, in 2011 there were 32 criminal or attempted burglaries that were alarm-related. From my observation, having and using an alarm system deters and minimizes the effect of property crimes.
In order to benefit from an alarm, however, one must consistently use and maintain his or her system. The use of an alarm system deters crime, and the familiarity with the system reduces the likelihood of a false alarm occurrence, which otherwise results in wasted police resources and costly fines to the user.
It's important to note that user error and hired contractors contribute to the majority of false alarms. (This includes cleaning people, landscapers, and general contractors.) Make sure you educate those who will be at your house, give them their own codes, or let them into the house yourself.
Also, please enter your alarm monitoring company's phone number into your cell phone so you can immediately cancel any false user dispatches. If you cancel an alarm dispatch before the police arrive, you will most likely not be responsible for a false alarm.
