A twenty-three-year-old volunteer-run grassroots organization that funds abortions for low-income Kansans today announced they are changing their name from the Peggy Bowman Second Chance Fund to the Kansas Abortion Fund.
“We are proud to be taking this step into our future,” said Sandy Brown, President of the Kansas Abortion Fund.” This name will help us to be clearer about who we are, serve more Kansans, and unapologetically advocate for abortion access.”
The Kansas Abortion Fund, which is affiliated with the National Network of Abortion Funds, has assisted the funding of safe and legal abortion care for thousands of Kansans over its 23 year history, and has ramped up its efforts in recent years thanks to state-level attacks on reproductive rights. Kansas’ recent ban on private insurance coverage for abortion, combined with its older ban on Medicaid insurance coverage for abortion, has made access particularly difficult.
The Kansas Abortion Fund is honoring Peggy Bowman, the activist after whom the fund was previously named, through a supplemental fund named the Peggy Bowman Fund. This fund will be used to assist Kansans in greater need of healthcare funding.
The Kansas Abortion Fund is also expanding its mission statement to be more gender inclusive; it now reads: “The mission of the Kansas Abortion Fund is to assist all Kansans in need of financial support to obtain abortion services.”
