OUR YEAR IN REVIEW
On September 25th, the Kennebunkport Historical Society held its Annual Meeting of the Membership at the Town House School. President Andrea Rolleri warmly welcomed attendees and led the evening’s program, reflecting on another successful year of preservation, education, and community engagement.
We welcomed two new members to our Board of Directors: John Caron and Chris Mara, and extended heartfelt thanks to our outgoing Board members, Phyllis Wentworth, Sarah O’Sullivan, and former President Sarah Reagan Auer, for their many contributions of time, talent, and leadership.
John Caron is the President of The Landing School of Boatbuilding & Design in Arundel. Before moving to Kennebunkport with his wife, Marissa, and daughter, Sofia, in 2020, John served in leadership roles at several nationally recognized institutions, including Brown University, Johns Hopkins University, and Northeastern University. A lifelong learner, John’s appreciation for history, literature, and the arts began during his undergraduate studies at Providence College and continued through his doctoral work in Education at the University of Pennsylvania.
Chris Mara brings a lifelong passion for education and literacy to the Board. Originally from Midcoast Maine, Chris raised her family there before moving to Kennebunk 20 years ago. A retired teacher and literacy coach, she taught and mentored students from Deer Isle to New Bedford, Massachusetts, and spent 12 summers teaching at KBIA. She also founded several Little Free Libraries in her community and continues to share her love of reading and learning through her volunteer work as a docent at the Nott House and as a member of the Society’s Education and Events Committees. Chris treasures time with her three grown children and six grandchildren and brings creativity, warmth, and enthusiasm to all she does.
We are grateful for the leadership, passion, and dedication of all our Board members, past and present, who help guide the Society in fulfilling its mission to preserve, protect, and share Kennebunkport’s rich history.

At the conclusion of the meeting, President Andrea Rolleri introduced a preservation initiative that the Board of Directors has identified as a priority for the future.

PRESERVING THE PAST,
PROTECTING THE FUTURE
| |
At the Kennebunkport Historical Society, our mission is to collect, preserve, and share the stories that define our town’s unique history. For decades, we have cared for thousands of irreplaceable items, including but not limited to, diaries, photographs, maps, clothing, and artifacts. Each piece tells a story of the people and moments that shaped Kennebunkport.
While our current collection is housed in a climate-controlled and carefully managed environment, it remains vulnerable to the very elements we work so hard to protect it from: fire, water, and time itself. To ensure that these treasures endure for generations to come, we are taking the first steps toward building a state-of-the-art archival facility, which will be a lasting investment in the preservation of our community’s legacy.
This project, spearheaded by Board President Andrea Rolleri, is now in its early planning stages. Our immediate focus is on ensuring that the design meets all town requirements and codes, setting the foundation for what will become one of the most significant preservation efforts in our Society’s history.
Unlike town departments, the Historical Society receives no municipal funding; our work is sustained entirely by memberships, ticket sales, donations, and community support. The creation of a new archival facility will be above and beyond our operating budget, but it represents the next essential step in fulfilling our mission and ensuring the longevity of Kennebunkport’s cultural heritage.
In the coming months, we will begin seeking lead gifts and corporate partnerships to help bring this vision to life. We invite those who share our love of local history and belief in legacy to stay tuned as the project evolves, and to join us in protecting the stories that make Kennebunkport remarkable.
Together, we can ensure that the memories of the past remain accessible, safe, and alive for generations yet to come.

SUMMER LECTURES
With Sharon Cummins
This summer, Historian Sharon Cummins once again brought Kennebunkport’s past to life through her engaging and informative lecture series. Each talk offered a fascinating glimpse into the people, places, and moments that have shaped our community.
Topics this season included the history of Dock Square, Cape Arundel, the artists of the Kennebunks, and, most recently, the Indigenous people of the Kennebunks, each one offering a fresh perspective on our town’s evolving story.
We are deeply grateful to Sharon for her dedication to research, storytelling, and preservation. Her lectures have become a cherished tradition for members and visitors alike, reminding us of the depth and richness of Kennebunkport’s history.
We look forward to next summer’s series and the new stories we’ll discover and share together!

LECTURE RECAP: Billboard Monuments with Ron Romano
In September, we were pleased to welcome Ron Romano to our lecture series at the Town House School. Mr. Romano, a noted expert on historic Billboard monuments throughout New England, shared insights from his extensive research, helping attendees gain a deeper appreciation for these remarkable and often-overlooked memorial structures.
Kennebunkport is home to three Billboard monuments, all located at Bass Cove Cemetery. Following his presentation, Mr. Romano led guests on a special walking tour of the site, offering an up-close look at these unique works of stonecraft and the stories they preserve.
It was an inspiring afternoon that connected our audience with both art and history in a truly tangible way.

Our collection continues to grow with remarkable pieces that deepen our understanding of Kennebunkport’s past. Over the summer, we added several fascinating items to the archive, each offering a unique window into the lives and stories of our community.
Among the newest additions are a family Bible from the Perkins family, memorabilia from the Barbara Bush stamp dedication ceremony held in Kennebunkport this summer, and a handwritten minister’s log from the late 1800s to early 1900s, recording marriages, funerals, and sermons across Cape Porpoise, Kennebunk, and Kennebunkport.
These treasures help us preserve and share the human side of history, the names, events, and moments that shaped our town. We’re honored to steward them and look forward to continuing the work of protecting Kennebunkport’s legacy for generations to come.

This fall, we are delighted to shine our Volunteer Spotlight on Donna and Ken Simard, who have been part of the Kennebunkport Historical Society family for nearly a decade. Their story began when Donna happened to drive past White Columns and noticed a sign asking for volunteers. She reached out, and the rest, as they say, is history!
Since that day, both Donna and Ken have become essential members of our team. You can often find Donna in our gift shop, greeting visitors with a warm smile and sharing her knowledge of Kennebunkport’s history. She also served on our Board of Directors, helping guide the Society’s mission. Ken, meanwhile, works tirelessly behind the scenes, lending his skills to countless maintenance projects, such as moving tables and chairs, fixing and building things, and ensuring our historic properties are always at their best.
Donna and Ken will celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary this November. Together, they have 2 children, 8 grandchildren, and now 5 great-grandchildren who bring them endless joy. When they’re not helping at the Society, they can often be found enjoying time with their growing family.
We are so grateful to Donna and Ken for their years of service, kindness, and dedication. Volunteers like them truly embody the spirit of community that keeps Kennebunkport’s history alive.
| | THANK YOU TO OUR INTERNS! | | |
This year, we were fortunate to have two talented interns contributing their time and energy to the Kennebunkport Historical Society.
Keala Henry, a long-time volunteer, returned this summer as our Collections Intern, dedicating ten weeks to scanning and digitizing a large portion of our historic photo collection. Her work ensures that these irreplaceable images will be preserved and accessible for future generations. Keala’s commitment and attention to detail were extraordinary, and we are so grateful for all she accomplished. Our digitization project still has a long way to go, and we hope to welcome her back next season to continue this important work.
Brielle Thompson, a RSU 21 High School Senior, joined us last spring as our Social Media Intern. From the very beginning, Brielle demonstrated a natural understanding of our audience and the mission behind our work. She has helped us grow engagement across both our Facebook and Instagram pages, expanding our reach and connecting new audiences to Kennebunkport’s history.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to both Keala and Brielle for their dedication, creativity, and hard work. Their contributions have made a lasting impact on the Society and our community.
