Three Fall Opportunites for

Adventure,

Research,

and Certification!

Adventure:

There's plenty of summer sunshine left in the afternoons for Middle School students to get some hands-on marine science and coastal exploration experience with CSCR.

Our 8-week Science-After-School program for students in grades 6-8* meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30pm. The adventures begin on September 15th and carry on until November 5th.

For these 16 engaging sessions, the fee is only $495. Reach out to Susan Bryant (sbryant@ccscr.org) should you have any questions.

*Exceptionally interested 5th graders welcome!

Research: CHS Marine Science & More

We look forward to hosting Cohasset High School's Marine Science students once again this fall. Over the past 3 academic years, a strong collaborative effort by Cohasset Public Schools and CSCR to blend classroom study with hands-on, authentic coastal research has grown some deep roots. Supported by NOAA's BWET grant program, a funding source to grow "Meaningful Watershed Education Experiences" for students everywhere, CHS Marine Science students regularly enjoy field work with CSCR. Join us later in the school year (date TBD) for a public poster session that stands as a culminating assessment of their independent research.

... & More!

We hope to take advantage of the fall weather to pursue various aspects of summer 2025 research. The Eelgrass Team, for example, is hopeful that a few restoration expeditions will materialize this fall. Varsity Research students, especially members of the highly experienced eelgrass team, should reach out to team leader Susan Bryant about their availability.

Same for the Oceanography team-- Elsie Hession may be leading a couple more deployments of the data loggers to gather some fall pH data inside and outside of the harbor.

As we inform students during our spring orientation, and repeat frequently throughout the research season, one is never quite finished in this business of ours.

If you're a Varsity Research student (with some currently unscheduled time in your life), or want to become involved in our Varsity Research program, let us know! (Contact Jack, Elsie, or Susan: jbuckley@ccscr.org; elsie.hession@gmail; sbryant@ccscr.org)

GIS Certification:

Students in your community can now become state certified as “GIS Proficient,” thanks to a CSCR partnership with MassGIS. Support for the program's launch began with funding earmarked by Representative Joan Meschino and it continues this academic year, thanks to a Goodrich Research Grant from the Hingham Land Conservation Trust.

The 10-week program utilizes foundational lessons from the Top 20 Essential Skills for ArcGIS Online (Esri Press) and challenges students to apply their GIS skills to their own community. This year’s challenge question, “Should the Commonwealth of Massachusetts prioritize preservation of natural and working lands,” is based on pending state legislation, SB.549 / HB.1005, An Act Investing in Natural and Working Lands, sponsored by Senator Jo Comerford and Representative Joan Meschino. This guiding question requires students to apply their skills to the local community in a capstone analysis presented to the leadership team at MassGIS, the culmination of the student’s GIS-learning experience.

Any student in the Commonwealth can join the program. South Shore students can learn more about the program on Sept 18, 7pm, in the Whiton Room at Hingham Public Library. Join us for an evening with the Hingham Land Conservation Trust to learn more about the GIS Certification program.
