Falls and Older Adults

The CDC estimates that around 36 million falls are reported among older adults each year, with 32,000 resulting in death.

Each year, about three million older adults are treated in emergency departments for a fall injury.

One out of every five falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury.

Women fall more often than men and account for three-quarters of all hip fractures.

More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling - usually by falling sideways.

Each year at least 300,000 older adults are hospitalized for hip fractures.

Fall Prevention

January is Fall Prevention Month! Read on for tips on how to decrease the risk of a fall at home:

MOVE FURNITURE

If you have to walk around furniture to get through a room, ask someone to help you move it so your path is clear.

IMPROVE SHOWER SAFETY

If the bathtub or shower floor is slippery, put a non-slip rubber mat or self-stick strips on the floor of the tub or shower.

REDUCE FLOOR CLUTTER

If there are toys, shoes or other objects on the floor or stairs, pick them up. Always keep your floors and stairs clear.

AIHS in the News

Aging & In-Home Services has been selected through a national competition to be part of three national learning collaboratives. Each collaborative has its own focus but all three support a cooperative workforce across state lines to streamline access and service delivery to all individuals within the aging & disability network. The three collaboratives are:

The Community Care Hub National Learning Community (NLC)

AIHS was chosen by the Administration for Community Living (ACL) to address health-related social needs and public health needs through contracts with health care entities.

The National Caregiving Learning Collaborative

AIHS was chosen by the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University to help better understand the most effective means to promote successful implementation, adoption and sustainability of organizational practices to benefit caregivers.

The Building Accountability for Health Equity Learning Collaborative

AIHS was chosen by the Aging & Disability Business Institute to help Area Agencies on Aging build and sustain accountability mechanisms and institutional capacity essential to implementing, tracking and reporting on efforts to address health disparities.

AIHS is the only organization from Indiana to be represented on all three of these collaboratives.

"We are honored to have been selected to these three collaboratives to not only share our expertise but also learn and gain valuable resources to continue our top-notch services for the most vulnerable of northeast Indiana Hoosiers."

-Connie Benton Wolfe, AIHS President & CEO
