Book Club

Who: DSAWM members aged 16+
Where: Chapbook Cafe
When: 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of the month, August 20 - TBD from 5:30-6:30pm

Teens and adults with Down syndrome are invited to join Bobbie for Book Club. Meetings will be held at Chapbook Cafe, inside Schuler Books. Drinks and snacks are available for purchase. After finishing each book, the club will attend a screening of the film adaptation!

ENABLE Presentation
Who: Parents & caregivers
When: Tuesday, September 10 from 6-8pm

Philip Clark from ENABLE Special Needs Planning joins us for an interactive workshop that will provide an overview of the 5 areas of comprehensive planning and help families as they begin thinking through aspects of their own family’s plan in each area. All participants will receive a free e-book with more details about the planning process that will allow them to further the conversation with their family after the event.

Cooking Capers
Who: DSAWM members aged 16+
When: alternating Thursdays, September 12 - December 12 from 6-8pm
*2 sessions offered, each group meets biweekly
*no class on October 31 or November 28

Cooking Capers is taught by experienced GVSU Master's level dietetic students, so parents and caregivers do not need to stay. Participants learn culinary terminology, cooking methods, measurements, and kitchen safety while crafting a delicious, healthy recipe. Students enjoy the fruits of their labor at the end of each class. Our menu is always gluten-free. Parents are welcome to stay and socialize together in the dining area or drop off students and return at the end of class.

Shape Up

Who: DSAWM members aged 14+
When: Mondays, September 16 - December 9* from 6:30-8pm
*no class on November 25

Shape Up is a health & fitness program for teens and adults with Down syndrome. Learn to take control of your health through wise food choices and fun physical activity. 45 minutes of health & nutrition education is followed by 45 minutes of fun exercise.

Step Up for Down Syndrome
Who: Everyone!
When: Saturday, September 21 from 8:30am-noon

Step Up for Down Syndrome is the largest Down syndrome awareness event in Michigan and DSAWM’s biggest fundraiser, raising nearly 40% of our annual budget! Families, friends, and the public are invited to this annual celebration and walk where we come together to support our loved ones with Down syndrome. This year’s event will be held at Fifth Third Ballpark and we will be turning it up to 11 with our theme “Rockin’ an Extra Chromosome.”

Aging with Down Syndrome
Who: Parents & caregivers of members aged 30+
Where: DSAWM office
When: last Monday of the month, September 30 - November 18* from 6:30-8pm
* November's meeting will be on the second-to-last Monday of the month

Caregivers of individuals with Down syndrome over the age of 30 are invited to this support group sponsored by DSAWM and the Alzheimer’s Association. Share experiences and discuss the process of caring for loved ones growing older with Down syndrome. Aging with Down syndrome runs concurrent with Shape Up, providing an opportunity for teens and adults with Down syndrome to take control of their personal health while their parents attend the group.

Baby Sign Language
TLP speech playgroup
Who: Members aged 5 and younger and their parents
Where: DSAWM office
When: Saturdays, October 5 - 26 from 10-10:45am

Bring your little ones and join us for Baby Sign Language. With just a few simple signs from American Sign Language, you can start communicating with your child – even before (s)he starts to talk! Signing is fun, easy to do, and great for your child’s development! Siblings will be welcomed as space allows.

Buddy Up Tennis
Who: DSAWM members aged 5+
When: TBD*
* We are waiting on MVP to confirm dates and times for the Fall session.

Buddy Up Tennis teaches children and teens with Down syndrome the game of tennis while supporting healthy physical and social development. Athletes work with professional coaches and one-on-one Buddies. Tennis racquets are provided.
