Updated Educational Packet

The Partnership for a Tobacco Free Wisconsin released their updated educational packet which highlights the current state of commercial tobacco in Wisconsin. Major takeaways from the packet include:

  1. Commercial tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death in Wisconsin
  2. E-cigarette use among youth and young adults is a public health crisis.
  3. The indoor smoke-free air law does not currently include all forms of smoking such as e-cigarettes and cannabis.
  4. The Tobacco Industry uses menthol, candy, and fruity flavors to appeal to Wisconsinites from all walks of life and get them addicted to nicotine.

Nicotine Pouches

Nicotine pouches are becoming increasingly popular among youth, but what do we know about them?

Many nicotine pouches are made by major tobacco companies. They are available in a variety of flavors and are often marketed in similar ways as other tobacco products.

These products contain nicotine, which is a highly addictive chemical found naturally on the tobacco plant but can also be made in a lab.

Learn more about Nicotine pouches and their health impact through the link below!

Upcoming Events

Young people are increasingly encountering vaping and nicotine products that are designed to hook the next generation, potentially leading to a lifetime of nicotine addiction.

The UNFILTERED: Youth Voices Impacted by Nicotine project aims to unite youth from across the state with our allies and partners throughout the 2024-25 school year to build the skills and empower young people to drive positive change in their communities.

This November, local coordinators, schools, and youth organizations are working together throughout Wisconsin to collect stories on impact cards. These cards are anonymous and will be compiled to share the unfiltered impact nicotine products have on our young Wisconsinites. Additionally, resources will be available to offer support to young people in overcoming nicotine addiction.

Schools and youth organizations can access digital copies of the impact cards and example lesson plan on the Resource tab of the FACT website.

CDC releases Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report on Youth Tobacco Use

Use of tobacco products in any form is unsafe, and nearly all tobacco product use begins during adolescence. CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) analyzed data from the 2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey to determine tobacco product use among U.S. middle school (grades 6–8) and high school (grades 9–12) students.

While tobacco use has declined, e-cigarettes remained the most commonly used tobacco product among U.S. youths; nicotine pouches were the second most common.
