Fall Athletics Updates

Girls Soccer

From Coach Taryn Brandel: We are excited to kick off another season of Ballard Girls Soccer! In our season opener, JV and Varsity traveled to Sammamish Tuesday to face off against Skyline. We'll host our first home of the season on Sept 24 against West Seattle High School at 4 p.m. Pack the Dam!

We would also like to recognize junior Chloe Steinburg, who recently verbally committed to the women's soccer program at Saint Mary's College of California (Go Gaels)! In both her freshman and sophomore seasons, Chloe was selected for the 1st All Metro Team and we are excited for what's ahead in her junior season here at Ballard.

Schedule. Follow the program @ballardgirlsoccer. Thanks Coach for the writeup!

Football

The Beaver Brigade packed the NWAC stands Thursday night, and Ballard Football fed off the energy, powering past Lincoln 23–6 in their season opener. Sophomore Bryson Meyer delivered the play of the night, ripping off an 85‑yard punt‑return touchdown that sent the student section into a frenzy.

Under new Head Coach and Ballard alum Ian Essig, Ballard became the first SPS football team to outfit its full varsity roster in guardian caps for a league game. This was brought to fruition thanks to the Seattle Seahawks and kind donors to the team's Snap! Raise spring fundraiser. (This season marks the third year of ABC’s partnership with Snap! Raise, a fundraising model that allows BHS teams to keep 90% of all dollars raised — with no credit‑card fees — ensuring more resources directly support athletes and coaches.)

The team next heads to West Seattle Stadium on Friday, Sept. 11 to face O'Dea. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Purchase tickets online. Photo by Ed Tanaka. Team Schedule.

Cross Country

Cross Country opens its season with four Metro Meets and three invitational events on the schedule. The first race is this Saturday at the 27th Annual Bellarmine Invite, where the Freshmen Girls Race kicks off the event at 9:05 a.m.

The Beavers return athletes from last year’s State Tournament, including members of the Girls Team that finished 11th in the state, along with Ciana Johnson (8th place individually) and Andrade Whissell‑Côté, who represented Ballard from the Boys Team.

Led by Head Coach Day Frostenson, Ballard hosts its first Metro meet at Magnuson Park on Thursday, Sept. 24, racing against Lincoln and Rainier Beach. Come cheer and enjoy the excitement of Cross Country racing. (You'll even get some steps in too, hustling to catch the best viewpoints around the course!) Metro Meet Boys races start at 3:40 p.m., while Girls races start at 4 p.m.

Additional Metro Meets:

  • Oct. 1 at Lincoln Park (vs. Ingraham and Chief Sealth)
  • Oct. 8 at Lower Woodland Park (vs. Franklin, Seattle Academy, Rainier Beach, and West Seattle)
  • Oct. 15 (vs. Roosevelt, West Seattle, Garfield, Lincoln, Sealth, O'Dea, and Holy Names).

Invitational events include the Fort Steilacoom Invitational on Sept. 19 and the HOKA 30th John Payne XC Invite (Chambers Creek) on Nov. 7. Follow the team's season on their Athletic.net page. Photo of 2025 Girls Team setting the pace by Yuriko Brunelle.

Girls Swim & Dive

Girls Swim & Dive splashes into the season Friday at its first meet against Eastside Catholic, starting at 4 p.m. at Rainier Beach Pool.

In their third season with Head Coach Tom Keenan, the team is looking forward to another year of growth, returning junior Maddie Yovanovich who finished 4th in State in the 100 backstroke (57.46) and 7th in State in the 200 IM (2:10.15), as well as her fellow state relay teammates Poliya Fong, Penelope Guist, and Bailey Bargfrede.

Led by team captains Freya Godwin, Penelope Guist, and Ivy Toppenberg, the Beavers welcome fans to cheer at their home opener at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18 against Nathan Hale. Full Schedule. Photo c/o and follow the team @bhsgirlsswimanddive.

Slowpitch Softball

Ballard Slowpitch, the reigning Metro League Sportsmanship Award winners and qualifiers for last year’s State Tournament, are ready to take the field for another season of competitive, high‑energy softball.

Led by Head Coach Dale Griffith — a three‑time Metro Coach of the Year — the Beavers return a talented core featuring All‑League standouts Liv Shane (catcher), Harper Greenwood (pitcher), Ash Carlton (outfield), and Abby Fulford (infield).

The team has two non-conference games on the road next week (Inglemoor, 5 p.m. Sept 16 and Juanita, 4 p.m., Sept. 18) before traveling to Ingraham to face the Rams at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21. Full schedule. Follow the team @ballardslowpitchsoftball. 2025 State Tourney photo.

Volleyball

Beaver fans, come cheer for Ballard Volleyball tonight (Thursday) in the Dam as they host the Ingraham Rams at 7 p.m. With 13 seniors on the roster, the Beavers bring experience and steady leadership as they look to build on last year’s Metro Tournament showing.

The program opens the season four teams strong, and under Head Coach Zach Wurtz, Varsity is off to a solid 2–0 start — a 3–1 non‑conference win over Interlake Sept. 1 at home, followed by Tuesday’s 3–0 sweep at Cleveland.

Golf

The Golf team will host Bishop Blanchet Friday at Jackson Park, starting at 3:30 p.m. On Monday, Sept. 14, they'll host Seattle Academy, also starting at 3:30 p.m. at Jackson Park.

The Varsity Girls squad includes: Ava Boorman, Ruby Demetrios, Frida Hadzisadikovic, Audrey Honeycutt, Avery Powers, Grace Shiotani, Georgia Turner, Wren Wald, Ruby Wallblom, and Sydney Willis.

The Varsity Boys squad includes: Owen Cooper, Luke Day, Elliot Dotson, Asher Dvorkin, Neo Embrey, Sam Giroir, Arlo Johnson, Kyler Kearns, Ellis Knudson, Henry Smith, Ciaran Varley, and Dash Yoder.

Led by second-year Coach Katie Walser, the team looks to build on last year's post-season success.
