Fall/Winter 2017

In trying times, it is important to find sources of inspiration, whether it be through a good book or poetry, a story of forgiveness, redemption or transformation, or time spent communing with nature. Often our relationships with animals can restore us, reminding us that compassion and unity are real and a part of who we are as a species. These human-animal relationships shine brightly, lifting our spirits even in the dark times. May this short video help you remember that love, too, lives in our hearts.

In gratitude,

Way of the Shaman movie
The new documentary film The Way of the Shaman: The Work of Michael and Sandra Harner was released for free online streaming July 22, 2017. The film is an informative and inspiring look at the people behind the evolution of core shamanism, the groundbreaking spiritual healing methodology that honors and builds upon the ancient knowledge of the world's shamans. Through these methods, thousands of students have discovered hidden spiritual resources, transformed their lives, and learned how to help others and our precious Earth.

A viewer says:
"This is an absolutely wonderful film about the incredible contribution of Michael Harner to shamanism/preserving cultural shamanism."
Nicholas Breeze Wood, editor of Sacred Hoop magazine writes:

" Made up of a series of interviews with Michael and Sandra, along with friends and colleagues - and interspersed with film clips of workshops being taught, and traditional shamans in practice - this film not only shares the history of Michael's work, but is also an excellent 'stand-alone' basic guide to modern Western core shamanism in its own right."

Uncontacted tribe

We are deeply saddened by reports of the massacre of more than 10 members of an uncontacted tribe in a remote area of western Brazil. Agents from Brazil's indigenous affairs agency, FUNAI, confirmed details of the attack to Survival International, a global organization that works to protect tribal people in many parts of the world. Read Survival International's report of this tragic situation, along with more about their organization, including how to support their efforts to protect indigenous people.  A recent article in The Guardian provides context about the ongoing political and environmental threats to Brazil's indigenous people.

In a recent documentary - Missy Stevens, The Spirit and Technique of Painting with Thread - textile artist Missy Stevens talks about her extraordinary thread paintings and how her deep connection with spirits through shamanic journeying inspires the work. Missy Stevens is a graduate of the FSS Three Year Program of Advanced Initiations in Shamanism and Shamanic Healing, and the Two Week Shamanic Healing Intensive. For more about shamanism and the creative process, see Sandra Harner's article Shamanism and Creativity or check out the FSS advanced workshop Shamanic Training in Creativity.

HEALING WORDS
The Cloud People
by Robbie Staufer

Shamanism teaches us that everything has a spirit and that if we listen and open our hearts, we can connect with and be healed by the miraculous unity of all things. In this essay, shamanic practitioner and FSS faculty member Robbie Staufer shares her own moment of joy and healing through an encounter with "the cloud people."

My Labor Day weekend got off to a rocky start on Friday. I'd only been up for a few minutes, when I realized I was feeling terrified. It was all the usual things we can find ourselves scared about on a given day - money, work, love, relationships - that day, I was feeling it all! I called on my helping spirits for support the way I do every day, knowing that support can come in many forms, and I sent an S.O.S. out by text to a few friends at the Boulder Center for Conscious Community, where I have my practice. I got some encouraging suggestions back, and a few great 'heart' emojis, and the sense of connection began to break the spell. It did not prepare me for what happened next.

Clouds over mountains
I looked out my west-facing living room window, and noticed a band of storm clouds gathering over the foothills. It's a common enough sight in Colorado, brilliant blue sky, billowing white clouds with gray bellies full of rain, but suddenly something extraordinary happened. A feeling of exhilaration welled up inside me. It came from nowhere and broke through the knots of fear that had me in their grip. It felt amazing, and I caught myself scurrying to tamp those expanded feelings back down. "Not a good idea to feel that great, Robbie," I heard my brain telling me. "Remember the world's a sad and scary place!"

But in that moment, I made the choice I don't always make, to give my brain a rest, let my heart open, and just feel good about feeling good. And that was when I knew that those weren't "just" clouds, they were the Cloud People. They were living beings with spirits, just like me, and they were offering me the chance to connect, and to share in the same miraculous aliveness that sent them soaring over the mountains towards me. I remembered that until we open our hearts, we're separate. We can forget one of the most essential principles of shamanism, that everything is alive and has a spirit that we can learn to connect with. I chose to let myself experience that connection, and let it heal me...
