Spanish Language Community Academy Graduation
In October the Novato Police Department celebrated with the graduates of the first Spanish Language Community Police Academy.

Graduates spent eight weeks learning about what police officers do every day.  The most popular and eye-opening part of the academy is the field exercise day where community members observe real life scenarios to experience what police  officers encounter in the field each day.

 Reopening Celebration at Dogbone Meadow
 Dog Park

TJ  appreciates the new turf

Dogbone Meadow Dog Park,  located at 3015 Novato Blvd., reopened on November 3 after undergoing the first major improvement project in its 15-year history. The result is improved site accessibility and irrigation, and replacement of one acre of turf. Upgrades include a dog wash area (no soap please), water-saving & bacteria-reducing drinking fountains, as well as benches and the addition of trees to create more shaded areas.

The small dog area of the park has been re-christened "Brian's Place", in memory of Friends of Dogbone Meadow's first president  Brian Pearson, and is now a "gentle play area" for  smaller dogs, elderly dogs, dogs recovering from health conditions and any size dog that prefers to take things easy.

The project was a team effort of the Administration, Public Works and Parks, Recreation and Community Services staff, with  Friends of Dogbone Meadow providing input and support.  The Marin IJ featured coverage of the opening event.

Update on Personal  Cultivation of Cannabis

At its meeting of October 2, 2018, the Novato City Council adopted regulations for the personal cultivation of cannabis within City limits. The Council authorized indoor cultivation of up to six (6) plants per residential property, regardless of the number of occupants, in accordance with state law, with modifications: Indoor cultivation is allowed both within a residence and also within a "Fully Enclosed and Secure Accessory Structure,"  which is a detached accessory building that has a roof, a foundation, and solid walls that are not transparent or breakable.  These might include an accessory art studio, office or pool cabana, but not a greenhouse.

Note: The City Council did not authorize outdoor cultivation (either open air-such as a yard or garden, or within non-secure and enclosed accessory structures such as greenhouses or hoop structures) within City limits for personal use.

Join the Next Team Up to Clean Up Work Day on December 1
On the first Saturday of each month, a stalwart group of Novato volunteers gather at a pre-determined location in Novato to pick up litter. Kudos and many thanks to Novato residents Marcia Basalla, Virginia Hanna, and Joni De Gabriel for creating Team Up to Clean Up  in partnership with the Novato Streetscape Committee.

Team Up to Clean Up Results on November 3

On November 3 volunteers met near the Rowland Movie Theater on Rowland Way to clean up Novato Creek. Due to the volume of debris needing to be picked up, the team will return there on December 1. If you'd like to help, meet at the parking lot of the Rowland Theater at 9am and look for the Novato Streetscape sign, pictured above.

Joining Team Up to Clean Up is a way for students to earn community service hours and for anyone else who wants to help our community. We know a lot of you are already doing your part to clean up Novato! If you'd like to join a team and get details on upcoming clean ups, email Marcia Basalla at  marciabasalla@hotmail.com.
