Celebrating the Holidays with CBN

Our members had a blast celebrating the holidays with CBN last year! From our annual Christmas Day Luncheon at the Carter Burden Luncheon Club to fun parties and trips, our members had a wonderful time celebrating together this holiday season.

A special thanks to our generous CBN Board Members, who donated to support our annual Christmas Day Luncheon at the Carter Burden Luncheon Club, complete with lunch, decorations, holiday music with carolers, and delicious desserts which were also festively boxed and sent to homebound clients on the Upper East Side with their holiday meals. We are super grateful to the many volunteers who served meals, boxed cookies and delivered them to the homebound!

Check out the below photos to see how we celebrated some of the recent holidays:

CBN's Second Annual Senior Prom

After such a successful Inaugural Senior Prom in 2023, we decided to keep the party going and hosted our Second Annual Senior Prom at the Carter Burden Luncheon Club on November 7th for members across our four Older Adult Centers complete with dancing, music, delicious food, and the crowning of our Royal Court. It was a disco-themed full on bling event and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Thank you so much to the donors, members, CBN staff, community partners, and our high school volunteers from Eleanor Roosevelt H.S. for making this event so special. Your support of events like our Senior Prom as well as our daily programming helps to alleviate the loneliness and isolation associated with aging.

100th Birthday Celebration

We recently celebrated the 100th birthday of Bolivar "Boli", a longtime member of our Covello Older Adult Center! Boli, a proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather, was born in Ecuador and has been a resident of East Harlem since 1969. Boli has never been hospitalized, and his favorite phrase is "Don't worry, be happy". We celebrated with music, dancing and cake. Happy Birthday Boli!

CBN Honored at Mets game as "Hometown Heroes"

Last fall, CBN was honored as a National Grid Hometown Hero at a Mets game at Citi Field! The Mets generously donated tickets for CBN staff members to attend the game and see our name on the jumbo-tron.

Thank you to the Mets and National Grid for recognizing our efforts as a leader in aging services in NYC. Our staff had a blast at the game and, of course, go Mets!

NYC Aging Presents CBN with Certificates of Appreciation

We are happy to share that in honor of September's Older Adult Center Month, NYC Aging (formerly the NYC Department for the Aging) visited and presented Carter Burden Network’s four older adult centers with certificates of appreciation for our service and dedication to the community. We are so appreciative of this recognition, and are proud to make a positive daily impact in the lives of each older adult that visits or receives a service with us.

Staying Healthy at CBN with Health and Wellness Programs

Our Health and Wellness department has been busy keeping members and staff healthy this holiday season! Through exciting presentations with various Community Partners, vaccination workshops, and more, health and wellness remained at the forefront as we moved through the holidays…and the cold and flu season. CBN gratefully acknowledges our Community Partners for their partnership and commitment to the health & wellness of older adults in our shared communities.

Volunteering at CBN

Holiday Cards for the Homebound with The New York Junior League

Volunteers from The New York Junior League brought holiday cheer to CBN by assembling and hand delivering 100 holiday goodie bags and cards to our homebound clients! Gestures like these are so important to reducing isolation and loneliness amongst older adults who struggle to leave the home. Thank you so much to the volunteers at The New York Junior League for spreading holiday cheer!

Holiday Cookies and Meal Delivery with Oaktree Capital Management

Carter Burden Network would like to thank the amazing team at Oaktree Capital Management for sponsoring and festively assembling and delivering holiday cookies and meals to Upper East Side homebound older adults. Thanks to their help, CBN members were able to enjoy delicious cookies along with their daily meal to celebrate the holidays.

Celebrating the mid-Autumn festival with CBN's Smile Tribe

Last fall, volunteers from a Google employee-led volunteer group called the "Smile Tribe" made Korean-themed goodie bags for members at our Roosevelt Island Older Adult Center in light of the mid-Autumn festival holiday, Chuseok. This special occasion marks a time for Korean and Chinese families to appreciate the harvest, share traditional foods, and cherish moments with loved ones. Our members loved the care packages!

Colgate Cares Day

This past October, volunteers from Colgate returned to CBN to host their annual Colgate Cares Day. This event, which Colgate brought to the Carter Burden Luncheon Club, educated our members on oral hygiene and skincare through a fun presentation and trivia! Members even left with bags filled with Colgate-donated products.

Thank you to Colgate for your continued support of CBN! We also appreciate Colgate’s grant support of our Andrew Fund Program which assists low-income CBN older adults with financial assistance for pet care. Hill’s Science Diet brand is a subsidiary of Colgate-Palmolive. Volunteer Opportunities

Interested in volunteering with Carter Burden Network? Plenty of opportunities are available for individual, group and corporate volunteers to get involved at any of our centers, including meal service, custom events, garden beautification, and more, available Monday thru Saturday.

Read on for updates about some of our most popular volunteer opportunities. We hope to see you at one of our centers soon!

HOMEBOUND MEAL DELIVERY

Volunteers play an integral role in reducing isolation and bringing cheer to our homebound older adults. This volunteer opportunity includes assisting with meal delivery on foot from the Carter Burden Luncheon Club on the Upper East Side to clients' homes within a ten block radius. This volunteer opportunity is available Monday-Friday at the Carter Burden Luncheon Club at 351 E. 74th street @10:00am-1pm.

FRIENDLY VISITING - now serving expanded catchment areas!

Volunteers participate in social visits with older adults who share common interests and hobbies. They serve as companions and may play a game, take a walk, chat about current events, and more! Friendly Visiting now includes Manhattan Community Districts 8, 9, 10, 11 (Upper East Side, East Harlem, Central Harlem, Morningside and Hamilton Heights, and some in the Bronx).

GROCERY SHOPPING ASSISTANCE

Volunteers assist older adults at the supermarket, or they may shop and deliver groceries to older adults who are unable to leave their home. This is a great way to get to know an older adult and it also serves the crucial function of ensuring that older adults have food in their homes.

For information on how to get involved, click here to visit our website, or contact Jenny Moreno, Director of Volunteer Services, at morenoj@carterburdennetwork.org.

2024 Fundraising Campaign and Senior Prom: We Are Family

We will always go above. So our members will always belong.

For 53 years, Carter Burden Network has been a leader in aging services in NYC. Our 2024 Fundraising Campaign is nearing its end, and its theme, We Are Family, is more crucial than ever. Although our Second Annual Senior Prom has passed, there is still a lot of work to be done and the need is greater than ever to ensure that older adults are able to come together and live a life that is active, engaged, and healthy.

We are 78% of the way to our fundraising goal. Every dollar helps us continue to provide well-balanced meals, companionship, and the critical services necessary for New York City’s most vulnerable older adults.

If you have not yet donated (or if you feel inspired to make an additional gift that is fully tax-deductible) to the 2024 Carter Burden Network Fundraising Campaign, now is the time before we close out the campaign.

Remembering Maria E. Redo, longtime Board Advisory Member and friend to CBN

We are saddened to share that Maria E. Redo, our longtime Board Advisory member who served on our Board in different roles for decades, passed away last August. Maria was 99 years old.

Maria Redo was a true champion for the aged and has contributed much to aging services and enhancing the quality of life for older adults throughout her life, including pioneering the first senior citizen discount program in New York City in the 1970s which became a national model for other cities, and is still in place today.

In the words of our Executive Director, William Dionne, “Maria’s passion for the aging remained undiminished until she died. She was a pit bull, with her passion. She got things done. If she saw injustice, she wanted to see it changed. She was a true trailblazer and worked tirelessly on behalf of NYC senior citizens, and we are so very grateful for her many contributions. She was a gentle giant, beloved and admired by all.”
