DID YOU KNOW...

Do You Know the changes expected in our Roper Mountain forest from Hurricane Helene? The big changes will be an increase in forest openings called gaps. Light floods now into newly created gaps, creating excellent conditions for the growth of subcanopy and shrub species, as well as vines. Taking the place of a large windthrow pine or oak might be seedlings or herbaceous species now getting the light they need. Sometimes gaps develop a dense, almost jungle-like understory due to this higher light intensity.  Forest gaps also provide great basking areas for the lizards and snakes on the mountain.

Another obvious change will be all the fallen trees throughout our forest. These fallen dead trees will slowly decompose, recycling valuable nutrients back into the soil. This slow decomposition feeds a diversity of insects, fungi, and microorganisms. Hurricane Helene also created a lot of brush piles from our cleanup. Brush piles are a very important habitat element for many different kinds of wildlife. They provide cover from predators and places for nests, escape routes, and dens.

Not only do gaps add much to the diversity of our forest tree species, but also increase the diversity of our wildlife species. Larger forest gaps also create habitat edges that benefit mammals like deer, rabbits, raccoons and foxes. This edge effect is especially great for bird diversity.

The next time you see our forest after the Hurricane Helene damage, observe these changes to our forest ecosystem. Some species will even benefit from all of our downed trees. During our Afternoon Explorations on Thursdays and Fridays, find out more about our forest in our Habitats of Roper Mountain display.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

This month we feature two of our longest Community Partners, GE Vernova and BMW Manufacturing.

For over 25 years, GE Vernova (formerly GE) has been supporting projects and programs at Roper Mountain. They donated the initial startup funds for our popular Marine Lab in 2007, and have continued to support us both financially and through the involvement of their employees in popular programs like STEM Days of Summer.

BMW has also been a longtime supporter, providing financial support from the manufacturing plant in Spartanburg and through the BMW Charity Golf tournament for the past 5 years. Their hands-on demonstrations at STEM Days of Summer have always been a big hit!

Thank you, GE Vernova and BMW, for helping us fulfill our mission to ignite the natural curiosity of all learners to explore and shape their world!
