Fall in Love with Some Castaways this Fall

{View as Webpage}

Castaway Critters' mission is to save the lives of, and provide new beginnings for, lost, sick, and abandoned companion animals through rescue, rehabilitation, adoptions, and spay/neuter programs.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2023 Castaway Critters calendar contest. We exceeded our fund-raising goal for the calendar. Look for the calendars, full of cute pets, around November!

In this issue...Lots of other fun fundraisers happening right now. Check them out below. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for one of our most popular fundraisers last year with Little Ceasar's Pizza. We'll have an offer you can't refuse come October!

Save the date! Benny's Pet Depot's PawtoberFest  is Saturday, October 8th from 10-2. Lots of rescues in attendance, costume contest, DJs, raffles, and other events happening, and we will be there. Hope to see you there too. Scroll down this page for address and details.

In our training corner some important information on why we care so much about annual wellness exams for cats. So many people take dogs to the vet annually, but many fewer bring in their cats. Check out an article and a video to help you make those visits happen without so much stress.

Thank you for being part of the Castaway Critters family and supporting us. We can't do what we do without you.

Check out our website to see all of our adoptable animals!   We have lots of kittens and cats looking for their forever homes!

Not able to adopt a new family member? Consider donating or sponsoring an animal in need. We spend over $100,000 on vetting expenses every year, so every donation helps. Check out some of our events and other ways you can help below. Thank you for being part of the Castaway Critters family.

The Swimmer Kittens

No, we're not talking about kitties that go swimming. Recently Castaway Critters took in a mom and kittens who had been left behind in a mobile home. Mom was starving and their situation was dire. One kitten didn't survive, but the three that did had a congenital condition called Swimmer's Syndrome. (See photo above.)

This condition results in the cat's back legs being splayed (sometimes called frog's legs) and walking is quite difficult, and back legs get dragged behind the cat.

Luckily we got help from a vet who specializes in rehab, and on her advice the foster set up a pen with egg cartons underneath, which required the kittens to work to walk and develop stronger muscles, as well as a really fun obstacle course to encourage climbing and walking over objects. The results: after some intensive weeks of physical therapy using this course the kittens were walking totally normally!

The even better news - they will be neutered very soon and all have homes waiting for them.

Why Your Cat Needs to See the Vet Annually

If you've adopted a cat from us, you know we talk about annual vet care for cats. Most people take their dogs into the vet regularly but wait until a cat is sick before scheduling a vet appointment. Unfortunately, many cats don't show signs of illness until they are very sick, sometimes too sick to help. If you find it difficult to make that vet appointment for your cat, check out this article with some great suggestions to help make the process less challenging. Check out this video as well with some helpful advice from various pet health care experts about how you can help make those visits less stressful for you and your cat.
