Fall into Action: Kicking Off Our Senior Advisory Council for a Stronger District 6!

As we welcome the fall season, I’m energized by the opportunities to connect with my District 6 constituents and build a stronger community together. Recently, I had the privilege of kicking off my Senior Advisory Council (SAC), with the incredible support of my staff, Linda Handy. This initiative aims to unite our senior residents by addressing key issues such as food insecurity, safety, loneliness, transportation, and access to technology. The SAC is dedicated to advocating for our seniors and ensuring their voices are heard in our community.

A special thanks to Linda Handy and Meisha McGlothen Burnette for their leadership in getting the SAC up and running, and to United Seniors of Oakland and Alameda County for providing the meeting space. Together, we’re making meaningful strides for our seniors!

Warmly,

Council member Kevin Jenkins

Romell Williams is consistently committed to not only improving his own Sequoyah Hills neighborhood but also rolling up his sleeves to clean the streets of District 6. Recently, Romell took it upon himself to tackle a notorious dumping site at 73rd Ave and Bancroft. I was glad that my office could coordinate and support his efforts by providing a dumpster to help with the cleanup. His actions show his commitment to going beyond his own neighborhood, actively improving conditions in other District 6 communities. Thank you, Romell, for helping keep District 6 looking good, safe, and healthy for all!

Working Together for Long-Term Solutions on Holway Ave

I had a fantastic meeting with the Holway Ave community. The residents were happy to have me there, and we had meaningful discussions about their ongoing concerns, like illegal dumping, abandoned cars, and how they've been dealing with these issues for years. They're looking for real, long-term solutions, and I’m committed to helping them find those fixes.

Traffic safety was another major topic. Residents stressed the need for speed bumps on 55th Ave due to frequent accidents, and they expressed concerns about sideshows and the challenging one-lane setup on International Blvd, which makes turning onto main streets difficult.

We also talked about the Coliseum sale and what it could mean for Oakland. The community is eager to know what’s planned and how the city will benefit.

The turnout was amazing, and the food and drinks they put together really showed how much they care. I also want to give a shout-out to my staff member, Meisha McGlothen, for her incredible work engaging with constituents. We're following up with another meeting in September, where additional city staff will join to help address these concerns. Looking forward to keeping the conversation going!

Supporting Equity and Women's Leadership in Law Enforcement

As your Council member, I’m proud to support the 30x30 Initiative, which focuses on increasing women's representation in law enforcement. This event will inspire change and offer opportunities for both law enforcement careers and non-police officer roles. It’s a great chance to hear from women-identified leaders and learn how we can create more equity in policing!

Stay Safe and Legal: Tips for Hiring Junk Haulers in Oakland

Request Dump Receipts: Always ask for dump receipts from anyone hauling unwanted items from your home or business before paying them. A “good deal” could mean your items are being illegally dumped in Oakland, which could lead to fines or citations for you.
