For middle and high school teachers (grades 6-12) who want to run an after-school program focused on reducing and reusing waste for 15-30 students that meets weekly from December through May. The club must be co-led by two teachers who apply as a pair.

· four days of professional learning on December 12, January 15, March 3, and April 29;
· up to 20 hours of per session for time spent outside of regular school hours planning for and facilitating the after-school club; and
·support for leading students through an environmental service-learning project

On Thursday, October 17, Service in Schools (SIS) hosted its seventh annual Partner Fair at American Airlines Theatre, the home of Roundabout Theatre Company. At this year’s event, SIS and 18 partner organizations met with educators and administrators from across the city to share strategies and resources to support service-learning activities in New York City public schools.
The fair enabled educators to learn about the many ways that students of all ages can make a positive impact on communities at the local, national, and global levels. Partners provided information to support participants in guiding students to address community needs, such as environmental sustainability, cancer research, fighting hunger, and more. Teachers explored how to incorporate service into the classroom setting.

The 2019-20 Service-Learning Institute has Kicked Off!

On Wednesday, October 16, SIS kicked off the 2019-20 Service-Learning Institute, bringing together 49 educators from across the city for the first of four full days of professional learning focused on implementing service-learning in their classrooms.
During this first session, participants learned the foundations of service-learning as well as engaging techniques and activities for connecting service to classroom instruction. Teachers engaged in literature circles on the topics of homelessness, hunger, and the environment and utilized the MISO method (Media, Interview, Survey, Observation). Everyone enjoyed learning about these new techniques and had a lot of fun in the process.

Project Summary:
Kids Action Team members raised awareness about the importance of adopting animals and collected donations to support a local animal shelter.
Investigation:
The P.S. 214 Kids Action Team chose animal welfare as the focus of their service. Through reading articles and completing a root cause analysis, they identified the reasons that animals end up homeless, such as overbreeding and lack of room in overcrowded shelters. This only made them want to help more!
Planning:
To learn more about the issue of animal welfare and identify ways they could help the issue, students met with two animal rescue organizations. Workers at the organizations answered their questions about what supplies they needed most. Students also spent time with animals in shelters and got to experience the joy of connecting with cats and dogs. Then they got to work preparing a donation drive and informational booth for the upcoming parent-teacher conferences.
Action:
The Kids Action Team members ran their animal welfare booth during` parent-teacher conferences. They discussed and handed out information on how families can support animals in local shelters. They displayed a cardboard dog house where families could leave supplies to promote the donation drive to support the local rescue organizations. When the donation drive was complete, students delivered the goods to the organizations.

Student members presented their accomplishments at the Kids Action Team Celebration of Service on May 30, 2019.
Reflection:
Students took pride in educating their families about animal welfare and were thrilled that supplies they collected would go directly to animals in need. Some of them now hope to adopt a cat or dog one day!

provides social services
in a ‘one-stop shop’ model. Volunteers utilize their skills and talents in order to make a difference for the clients that POTS serves. Volunteers are able to give back to the community through serving meals in the Community Dining Room, organizing a clothing and goods drive, or providing one-on-one tutoring for children in the POTS Family Club. is a nonprofit organization that works with medical centers across the US to transform hospitals, outpatient centers, and long-term care facilities into cheerful places for pediatric patients and families. Project Sunshine operates programs in five countries, impacts over 150,000 pediatric patients and their families, and provides meaningful community service opportunities to over 18,000 volunteers.
The Kids for Kids volunteer program
