Good to know!
Why are my hydrangeas blue?
Did you know that the color of your hydrangeas is due to the pH of your soil?
Most hydrangeas are blue in Georgia because they have acidic soil with a low pH (typically below 6.5), which makes aluminum available for the plant to absorb and create blue pigments
Tip: To correct soil pH, you need to determine if your soil is too acidic or too alkaline and then apply the appropriate amendments.
For acidic soil, use lime (calcium carbonate or dolomitic limestone) to raise the pH.
For alkaline soil, use sulfur, iron sulfate, or aluminum sulfate to lower the pH.
Why did some of my hydrangeas not bloom this summer?
We had a snowy and cold 2025 winter. Cold temperatures and late freezes can kill buds that formed the previous year on old wood bloomers. Especially on varieties that bloom on old wood.
Tip: To help protect your plants apply mulch or pine straw: In late fall, after the leaves have fallen, add a thick layer of mulch or pine straw, around the base of the plant. This will insulate the roots and protect them from temperature fluctuations during the colder month.
