Friends,

With a crisp breeze in the air, the Fall is surely upon us. Leaves up and down the Boulevard are changing and we are reminded of the beauty and awe that nature brings us this time of year. Our students are immersed in their classes, co-curriculars, Houses, and activities. Faculty and staff are settling into the rhythm of another school year and our alumni and parent events have returned in grand fashion with Back-to-School Nights in the high school and Arrupe, as well as, our new parent receptions. We were even lucky enough to spend last Friday at Alumni Stadium at Boston College to cheer on our own Eagles in a "home" game in which they walked away victorious!

This past month, I was honored to travel to France for the second part of the Ignatian Pilgrimage with Fr. Matt Malone, SJ and Fr. Sam Sawyer, SJ. It was a deeply moving experience for which I am so grateful to have been a part. Back at home, our monthly mass celebrated St. Francis of Assisi. It was beautifully organized by Judge House, whose patron is Fr. Mychal Judge and who lived the values of St. Francis. The House masses are becoming a wonderful way for our community to gather each month and pay special attention to these holy men and women whom we hold up with reverence.

As is the case every fall, 150 colleges and universities gathered in McNeice Pavillion for our annual college fair which returned in person this year. The students had the afternoon to explore colleges both locally and around the globe. Its an exciting time for these young men as they prepare to leave Morrissey Boulevard for their next journey.

Lastly, I hope you'll join us on Saturday as we celebrate our annual Alumni & Parent Homecoming Weekend. We have a great line up of events and there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Our soccer team plays at 11:00 a.m. and our classes ending in 2's & 7's will be celebrating their reunion. It will be a busy day on campus with much to be grateful for!

Mike White '70 Makes a $10 Million Gift to BC High
On Wednesday, October 5, in front of the entire student body, faculty, staff, and friends, we shared that alumnus Michael D. White ’70 made a $10M gift to endow the school’s Center for Emerging Leaders. In addition to endowing the Center, the gift will help transform and improve buildings and physical spaces on campus for the House System. The gift will also enhance accessibility and affordability options for students.

The announcement came at the conclusion of a day where Mike spent the morning and early afternoon as “an Eagle for a Day” teaching and meeting with students on campus. In 2019, White gave a $1M gift to establish the Center, which has changed the way BC High students learn, experience, and practice ethical leadership.

Since I embarked on my tenure at BC High in 2017, Mike has been, and continues to be, a champion for our school and its success. said President Regan. Thanks to Mike’s generous contributions and support, we continue to change and challenge our young men to be the ethical leaders of our future. I am lucky to call Mike both a dear friend and a collaborator in furthering our school’s mission.
Welcoming our Newest Families
We were so pleased to welcome our new families back to campus this year. We started the evening with a terrific reception for families of color. Val Harris P'24, President of the BC High Parents Association, welcomed the group and provided a wonderful overview of how parents can engage with their sons school, ways to get involved, and who to turn to should you or your son need guidance. Following the reception, we joined over 100 new parents/guardians for enriching conversation and companionship. Our student speakers, Alex Jordan '23, Romero Captain, and JP Haber '23, shared their BC High stories and encouraged families to have their sons get involved, even if it feels uncomfortable at first.

If you're interested in getting involved in the BC High Parents' Association, please visit the BCHPA page on the website.

The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical
I'm thrilled to share news from the Dever Players. There are nearly 50 students involved with the musical and tech this year. Beth Killorin P'25, English Dept and Theatre Director shared the following; "the musical is based on the first book of the popular Percy Jackson YA series by Rick Riordan. It uses the characters of Greek mythology to tell the story of down-on-his luck teen, Percy Jackson, as he goes on a quest to save the world and discover who is father is, but in the process learns what his own gifts are and what true friendship is."

The production rehearses during the late start mornings (Wednesday) and activity block (Thursday) which allows students the opportunity to participate in other after school activities and athletics. Beth writes, "it feels great to be able to give kids this opportunity, so they don't have to choose one passion over another."

Performance dates for The Lightning Thief are:
  • 11/10 @ 7 p.m.
  • 11/11 @ 7 p.m.
  • 11/12 @ 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
  • 11/17 @ 4 p.m.
  • 11/19 @ 7 p.m.
The Eagles are off and Running!
As the playoff picture becomes more clear for our fall sports, we are proud of the hard work that the student-athletes have put in all season long -- supported of course, but their classmates and friends! Eagles Take on St. Johns Shrewsbury at Boston College
With over 150 alumni, parents, and friends gathering for a pre-game reception, the Eagles football team put on a terrific show as they beat St. John's Shrewsbury 35-15. The energy was palpable at Alumni Stadium and we are wishing them luck as they look to build on their big win! Go Eagles!

Keeping Tabs on the House System
Under the direction of Kaylee Maneen, Social Media & Digital Content Strategist, Jen Manning, Vice Principal for Student Life, and the Heads of House, each of the 12 Houses has enlisted several Social Media Interns to share the excitement and stories of their "housemates." The Instagram stories and posts are lively, informative, and a fun way to engage the student body. Please follow along if there is a particular patron or House you are interested in. Each house Instagram handle is shown below.
Eagles Head West

Feast of All Souls
Special thanks to Fr. Jim Croghan, SJ, Superior of the Jesuit Community at BC High and the Center for Ignatian Identity and Formation team for organizing this special project each year.

Each November, we are called to be particularly mindful of our beloved dead. In life, we shared love and joy. Our faith assures us that these bonds do not end with death. We invite you to list the names of your beloved deceased on the form here.We will place these names in front of the altar in Loyola Chapel to be remembered in our Masses, prayers, and sacrifices as an expression of our faith and in gratitude for your being part of the BC High community.
Following the Steps of Ignatius -- Lourdes to Paris
As the Director of the Work, I was grateful to participate in a pilgrimage that allowed me to deepen my Ignatian spirituality and appreciate more fully the context by which our unique approach to formation is created. On our journey, we were pilgrims in two holy cities: Lourdes, where the Blessed Mother appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous, in 1858; and Paris, the capitol of Catholic France, the “eldest daughter of the church.” In Lourdes we visited, and had Mass in, the Grotto of the Apparitions, where Bernadette was visited by Our Lady of Lourdes; the “Cachot,” her simple birthplace; as well as the famous healing baths. We also had an opportunity to participate in the torchlight procession at the Sanctuary for the Rosary.

Perhaps the most moving stop on our pilgrimage was our visit to Martyrium of Saint Denis in Montmartre. Located on the parish perimeter of the Saint Jean de Montmartre Church, tradition holds that on the morning of the 15th of August, 1534, Ignatius and his six companions, of whom only one was a priest, met and took upon themselves the solemn vows of their lifelong work. To pray in the very spot that Ignatius and his companions took their first vows was simply breathtaking.

BC Hire: Career Connections
BC Hire Career Connections has become a terrific program for our young alumni. This year, we have welcomed back alumni speakers to in-person luncheons for our current students as well. These programs help strengthen the alumni network and set BC High apart from other schools.

BC Hire Career Connections supports BC High’s current students and young alumni in securing meaningful summer jobs and internships, laying the groundwork for career success. Many of these internship opportunities are provided by the powerful BC High Alumni Network and our highly engaged parent community, while others are offered by firms in Greater Boston.
