Apply Pre-Emergents Now

Nothing is more noticeable than a sprinkling of winter grasses throughout an otherwise dormant lawn in January. Now is the only chance you will get to prevent this. From now through early September (first 10 days), an application of Dimension herbicide will stop grassy weeds from germinating this fall. If broadleaf weeds are also a problem, an application of Gallery herbicide will prevent those from coming up. With any pre-emergent herbicide, watering the product in is required to activate it. Come in and we can explain the products and their applications. Be sure to know the area of your lawn (not the lot size) when you come. Google Earth Pro is an excellent tool for measuring the area of your lawn if you are uncertain of its size.

Our first batch of garden mums arrived last week. Plants are budded and look excellent. Enjoy mums for outstanding fall color, but don't forget other winners such as Dragon's Breath celosia, ornamental grasses, marigolds, and crotons.

Additional garden seed arrived on Tuesday and our first shipment of cool season vegetable transplants arrives on Wednesday--all just in time for planting. Late August through early September is the time to plant cool season fall vegetables. Enjoy a fall garden filled with broccoli, cabbage, kale, lettuce, Brussel's sprouts, greens, spinach, turnip, carrot, radish, Swiss chard, and more. Plant now and harvest before winter arrives. Vegetable transplants are coming in regularly now.

Lawn Jobs

The end of August through first week of September is the time to make the fall application of pre-emergent. Applications made later than September 10th will result in diminished effectiveness and poor weed control. Lawns that have not been fertilized in the last eight weeks should be fertilized in early September. Continue mowing at the correct height for your type of lawn and irrigate as required.
