Bridging Language Barriers: New Earbud Translators Enhancing Communication at CASA Kane County

CASA Kane County is thrilled to announce the recent addition of 20 brand-new Earbud Translators to our resources, thanks to a generous grant from The Hope and Grace Charitable Foundation.

These devices are already making a powerful difference, allowing for more meaningful and productive conversations during visits with youth and families. These earbuds are a small tool with a big impactand just one more way we're building bridges across languages and lives.

The mission of The Hope and Grace Charitable Foundation is to nurture children into strong, responsible adults who give back to their communities. This donation is just one more way of helping make that vision a reality.

One of our volunteers recently shared their experience:

"Thank you for your assistance in obtaining the earbud translators! I met with the grandmother today who is caring for the baby in my case, and she speaks very limited English. We were both able to use an earbud and have a conversation. As we both get more comfortable with this communication method, it will help us form a stronger connection vs. working with a human interpreter."

Kiya Murphy

Advocate Supervisor

Kelly Vatianou

Advocate Supervisor

We are excited to welcome

Kiya Murphy as a CASA Kane County Advocate Supervisor!

Kiya graduated from Illinois State University in 2022 with her bachelor's degree in social work. During college, she volunteered with College Mentors for Kids and worked at a daycare — early experiences that fueled her passion for helping children.

She brings four years of case management experience to CASA, including three years specifically in foster care. Kiya is deeply committed to supporting kids in the child welfare system and is eager to bring her skills and dedication to this new role.

Kiya lives in DuPage County with her 4-year-old golden retriever/St. Bernard mix, Luna, and enjoys spending her free time with her furry sidekick.

Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Kiya to her new role!

We are excited to welcome back

Kelly Vatianou as a CASA Kane County Advocate Supervisor!

Kelly is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who brings over 20 years of experience in the field of social work. A lifelong Kane County resident, she grew up in Aurora and studied at Waubonsee Community College, Eastern Illinois University, and Aurora University. She now lives in Batavia with her husband and two children.

Her career has been dedicated to supporting children and families — from many years at Family Focus Aurora, where she worked with foster and adoptive families and those involved with DCFS, to her previous time at CASA Kane County as an Advocate Supervisor. Most recently, she worked in the Batavia Public School District, supporting students with specialized learning needs.

We are thrilled to welcome Kelly back to CASA Kane County, where her passion and experience will once again help ensure the best outcomes for children in foster care.

Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Kelly back to our team!

Julia O.

IL CASA Board

Congratulations to Julia O – Appointed to the Illinois CASA Board of Directors!

We are proud to announce that one of our very own, CASA/GAL Julia O, has been appointed to the Illinois CASA Board of Directors! Julia attended her first board meeting last week and is eager to bring her experiences as a volunteer advocate in Kane County to the state level.

Julia began her CASA journey in 2019 and has since served on two cases. Her first case involved six siblings ranging in age from newborn to 18, placed across a variety of homes throughout and beyond Kane County. Despite the challenges of the pandemic—transitioning from in-person to virtual visits—Julia remained steadfast in her advocacy, ensuring every child’s voice was heard. That case wrapped up in 2024, with the children ultimately placed in loving homes, either adopted or moving into independence.

She is now on her second case, working with three siblings ranging from age six to 15. Julia describes her CASA experience as “very rewarding,” explaining that she has deeply valued the opportunity to walk alongside children and families during such meaningful life transitions.

Outside of CASA, Julia is a school psychologist and a professor at Northern Illinois University. After completing her Ph.D. at Michigan State University, she joined the faculty at the University of South Florida before moving to NIU in 2015. In her academic role, Julia teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on child development and child adolescent therapy, while also conducting research focused on improving outcomes for youth with behavior challenges and the home and school factors that support positive development. She regularly publishes papers and presents at national conferences on these topics.

Julia’s professional expertise and lived experience as a CASA volunteer bring an invaluable perspective to the Illinois CASA Board. “In this role, I will be serving alongside the other members of the Board of Directors to help in facilitating advocacy for children who have experienced abuse or neglect. CASA Illinois helps support local programs, and I hope my experience working directly with children and families will inform decisions at the state level,” she said.

When she isn’t teaching, conducting research, or advocating for children, Julia enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, being outdoors, and reading.

Please join us in congratulating Julia on this well-deserved achievement. We are grateful for her service to CASA Kane County and excited to see the difference she will continue to make for children across the state of Illinois.
