Esports

Esports makes its debut at the WAWM RCS Department!

Have you heard of Esports?  Wondering what Esports actually is?   Esports is electronic competitive video gaming that was first introduced in 1972.  Through advancements with online  gaming and technology, Esports has grown in popularity.  A main reason for the rise in Esports popularity is that it is one of most inclusive opportunities to date, removing boundaries such as age and physical ability enabling all to play.

This summer the West Allis-West Milwaukee Recreation & Community Services Department hosted our first-ever Esports Season. The summer season  consisted of leagues in Chess, Rocket League (3v3) and Super Smash Bros.  At the end of our season, participants had the opportunity to enter tournament play where the league winners qualified for the United States Park and Rec Tournament (USPREC).  Players challenged other esport athletes from across the nation.
After some intense matches, the WAWM RCS Department is happy to share that Joshua Seavert (Good Shepherd), Tevin Danek (Frank Lloyd Wright), Chase Everts (Frank Lloyd Wright), and Mikel Jones (Lane) are National Runner-Ups in their respective leagues, finishing in second place.  Congratulations!

To address safety concerns surrounding online video gaming and interactions, the WAWM RCS Department has partnered with a company called Mission Control, to host our league.  Utilizing Mission Control, we are able to monitor interactions between players and ensure that players are only competing with other registered players from our community.

The WAWM RCS Department is hosting a Fall Esports Season which includes Fortnite Duos, Madden 21 (Xbox), Super Smash Bros, and Rocket League (3v3).  Interested Esports athletes ages 8-17 can click here to register online or call our offices during business hours at 414-604-4900.  Who's ready to play?

Spotlight
"Cuts for Kids"

On Monday, August 30th, the WAWM RCS Department was "buzzing" for the 1st Annual Cuts for Kids event.  "Cuts for Kids" was created and organized by Bobby Foreman, Program Manager, in an effort to help kids go back to school, prepared and feeling good about themself.  By the end of the day, over 70 kids were looking great, feeling great, and ready to get back to the classroom!
Each child attending "Cuts for Kids" received a free haircut, backpack full of school supplies, and a hotdog meal.  Over 8 local barbers and stylists graciously donated their time and talents to provide the haircuts.  Other local businesses donated backpacks, school supplies, food, and use of items to support the event.

When asked about the reason behind the implementation of the event, Foreman stated "Resilience and confidence go hand and hand. Students are faced with tough situations everyday that require them to exercise resilience and confidence in themselves to successfully navigate through those situations. If this event helps 1 student gain confidence in starting a new school year, it was all worth it"  The students that participated left full of smiles and appreciation.
Cuts for Kids partners include:
  • Victory Cuts - The Winning Look
  • Forever Faded Barbershop
  • Mr V's Barbershop

Family Events
The WAWM RCS Department's Annual Packer Family Night Trip was definitely eventful!  Our families battled the rain to watch the Green Bay Packers and the return of Aaron Rodgers to Lambeau Field that night and we definitely won't forget it.  Our seats were front row and by the players' tunnel where many of the children were able to snag souvenirs like Jordan Love's gloves and many other players' apparel.  Thank you to all the families that attended and we're looking forward to next year!

Dancing never ends and we're happy to provide a Dance program that provides opportunities for children and adults.
