October 2023 marks the 20th anniversary of Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

Phishing is popular among hackers and can be catastrophic for individuals, families, and businesses. Phishing makes up 44% of social engineering incidents, and 98% of phishing incidents are via email. But it isn’t enough to simply know that phishing emails are out there; you also need to be able to recognize and report them. Let’s preview some of the scripts used by hackers in their big heists this year:

●     Emails that contain an offer that’s too good to be true

●     Language that’s urgent, alarming, or threatening

● Poorly crafted writing with misspellings and bad grammar

●     Greetings that are ambiguous or very generic

●     Requests to send personal information

●     Urgency to click on unfamiliar hyperlinks or attachment

●     Strange or abrupt corporate communications

●     Sending e-mail address doesn’t match the company it’s coming from

If you suspect phishing when using an email account, please do not click on any link or forward the email. Depending on your email platform, there is likely a way to report the email. If you use Gmail, click here for instructions.

It's National School Lunch Week!

Falls Schools is celebrating the power of school lunch! In the quest for academic success, research shows that healthy school lunches give kids the nutrition they need to #LevelUp for academic success! Thanks to our SDMF School Nutrition team, all students receive delicious and nutritious breakfasts and lunches every day.

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) serves nearly 30 million children every school day. President John F. Kennedy created National School Lunch Week (NSLW) in 1962 to promote the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has inside and outside of the classroom.

On Tuesday, October 17, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Menomonee Falls High School Library Media Center (LMC), The School District of Menomonee Falls Alcohol & Other Drug Abuse (AODA) Committee is sponsoring a community presentation from the Love Logan Foundation. This is a chance for families to preview the presentation, which will be given to students during Red Ribbon Week on Mon. Oct 23 – Fri. Oct 27. The Love Logan Foundation’s mission is to save lives through increased support and education in the community, to end the stigma associated with mental health and substance use disorder, and to raise awareness of the dangers of fentanyl and other illicit drugs. Please reach out to Brooke Jakobi, the School District of Menomonee Falls AODA Coordinator at jakobro@sdmfschools.org with any questions.

On Saturday, October 28, 2023, the Menomonee Falls High School Band & Orchestra Program is taking traditional fundraising to the “matts” by hosting their Mattress Fundraiser to raise money for their trip to Hawaii in March 2024. This once-in-a-lifetime trip to Hawaii is an amazing opportunity for our local students to perform in Hawaii while exploring, learning, and creating memories to last a lifetime. Proceeds from this fundraiser will directly benefit the talented and dedicated students of the Menomonee Falls High School Band & Orchestra program!

The MFHS Band & Orchestra Program will host its 3rd annual Mattress Fundraiser on Saturday, October 28, 2023, from 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The MFHS Cafeteria will transform into a 25+ bed showroom of all sizes and styles. Name brands like Simmons Beautyrest and Wellsville are available for up to 50% off retail prices! Watch for area yard signs and for the few lucky group members who get to wear the “mattress suit” while promoting the sale to passersby.

For more information about the Menomonee Falls High School Mattress Sale Fundraiser, contact Susan Bastida at susan.bastida@cfsbeds.com or call 414-704-1678.

Owner and founder of the “Mattress Fundraiser,” Joe Matejka, says: “The concept is unusual but one that absolutely works. One in ten people buy a new mattress every single year. We offer the community a quality product they need at a great price, and the best part is that every sale benefits the organization we are working with. Our one-day sale can help a group raise thousands of dollars! That is why we are in this business…to help the community!”

A group of Menomonee Falls High School seniors will host a Thanksgiving Food Drive on Saturday, November 4, from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Schumann Stadium at MFHS. Started four years ago by MFHS student Reese McLaughlin, the Thanksgiving Food Drive hopes to fill the Falls Area Food Pantry shelves.
