Thank you for sharing with us, Mary. This is great inspiration for us to get outside and enjoy nature this summer.

Historical Tidbit:
Dandelion A Weed You Can Eat

Yes, we call them a weed, but as an early spring treat in the early 1900's they would
be picked for a dish of dandelion greens.
This natural food was used in recipes to add
a different kind of taste. Children would be sent out to pick and then the stem and blossom would be plucked from the greens and stewed on the stove top. It was a delicious dish served with vinegar for a sauce. The dandelion greens are somewhat like spinach when cooked. The root was also used as an addition to salads and an extract could be made to make tea, coffee and wine.

If you feel adventurous and want to try something different, just be sure that the dandelions you pick are not covered in pesticides or other chemicals before eating or cooking them. To be on the safe side, you can go to a store that sells natural foods and buy them.

A number of my family members would talk about the "stewed greens" and wine made with dandelions they had picked. I know one of their favorite fields to pick them in was on the east end of Plymouth Street at the Plympton line.

UCC of EB Roof Fundraiser
"Hello, my name is Ashley Lauzier and I am a member of the Union Congregational Church in East Bridgewater. My parents got married at this church and I have been going there ever since I was born. Last year I became a Pampered Chef Consultant and learned that I could hold fundraisers for different groups or people. I decided that I would like to hold a fundraiser and help the church raise money to fix the roof. This fundraiser will start July 1 and end on July 24.

It will be an online fundraiser so you don’t even have to leave your house! A group will be set up on Facebook and I will post recipes, games, cooking/kitchen tips, and I will be making videos as well for you to see different products in action. If you have any questions you can ask them in the group or you can message me through Facebook. You can order anytime throughout July, but the last order should be in by July 24. I look forward to holding this fundraiser and sharing cooking tips and tricks with you while we raise money for the new roof!

Here is the link to the fundraiser! You will be able to click on the link and then click the “Join Group” button. If you are on Facebook you can search “UCC of EB Pampered Chef Roof Fundraiser” in the search bar. After I see your request, I will accept and you are all set! If you have friends or family that would like to place an order as well feel free to invite them to the group!"

Help The Environment, Recycle Your Plastics
U.S. companies want our recycled plastics. There is a growing demand for sorted plastics here in the U.S. Currently, Massachusetts recycling facilities are sorting your plastic bottles, jugs, jars and tubs and selling them to plastic recyclers right here in the USA. Companies buy, clean, flake, or pelletize plastic into a raw material for making new consumer products, packaging, automotive parts, construction materials, and even 100% recycled Adirondack chairs. For a 1 minute overview of what happens to your plastic after you place it in the bin,  check out this video .

You can help ensure your plastic gets a second life by:
  • Keeping it clean!  As a Smart Recycler, you’re careful to empty, rinse and recycle only those plastic items that manufacturers can use – bottles, jugs, jars and tubs. Avoid the “wish-cycling” trap: just because that fork or spoon is made of plastic, doesn’t mean it’s recyclable.
  • Driving demand. By choosing products made out of recycled content, we have the power to drive demand for more recycled feed stock. Check out the Buy Recycled Products Directory to find products made with recycled materials, which is known as post-consumer resin (PCR).
Plastic recycling is worth the effort as long as you follow the rules. If you can’t recycle it, consider not buying it and using an alternative (reusable bamboo forks and spoons for example).

Family.
"Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city."
~ George Burns

"What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family."
~ Mother Teresa

"In truth a family is what you make it. It is made strong, not by number of heads counted at the dinner table, but by the rituals you help family members create, by the memories you share, by the commitment of time, caring, and love you show to one another, and by the hopes for the future you have as individuals and as a unit."
~ Marge Kennedy

"There's only one thing more precious than our time and that's what we spend it on."
~Leo Christopher
Celebrating our families. My favorite is Erma Bombeck:
“The family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another's desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.”
Have a great week : ) ~ Jacquie
