Historical Tidbit:
Blaze Razes Historic Toll House

Whitman- As 220 New Year's revelers awaited 1985 little did they expect their celebration would be cut short by a devastating blaze at the Toll House restaurant.

The fire started in a broiler and quickly moved throughout the complex of duct work and into an open attic. Two employers alerted the patrons who were evacuated without injury. Police reports state that some employers attempted to reenter the building to retrieve coats and personal belongings.

The fire spread so rapidly that the contents of the cash registers and safe were not retrieved until the next day. "It was a nightmare." acting Whitman Fire Chief Richard Grennon said. "There were no fire stops in the partitions and false ceilings everywhere."

Owners Frank and Carole Saccone were unsure whether they would rebuild. The only part of the restaurant left standing was the brick chimney and fireplace, which the restaurant was built around.

Firefighters were able to save a small building in the rear of the complex used to manufacture the famous Toll House cookies that the restaurant is noted for.

Former owner Ruke Wakefield invented the cookies at the site by crumbling chocolate into her butter cookies. Wakefield sold the recipe to Nestle Co. Then, in 1983, the Nestle company sued the restaurant for violating their copyright for the cookie and the name Toll House Cookies.

A federal judge called the Toll House Cookie a generic term which could no longer be considered a trademark of the Nestle company.

Positivity in Whitman Youths
On June 22, Whitmanite Lan Luu took her kids to fish at Hobart Pond by the cemetery. It was their first time there, with little idea what they were doing. Their family came across a group of young boys, who came over to give them tips about how to get the best catch.
Lan was so happy about how encouraging and enthusiastic the boys were with her young children. Her 7 and 6 year olds were complaining that their rods weren't real and one boy stayed behind to give lessons on why it's called fishing and not catching. He also told them he had caught the best fish on a kid rod.
She wanted to say how amazing this group of boys were and hopes to meet them again at the pond! She also hopes their parents are able to see this!

Help The Environment, Recycle Your Plastics

U.S. companies want our recycled plastics. There is a growing demand for sorted plastics here in the U.S. Currently, Massachusetts recycling facilities are sorting your plastic bottles, jugs, jars and tubs and selling them to plastic recyclers right here in the USA. Companies buy, clean, flake, or pelletize plastic into a raw material for making new consumer products, packaging, automotive parts, construction materials, and even 100% recycled Adirondack chairs. For a 1 minute overview of what happens to your plastic after you place it in the bin,  check out this video .

You can help ensure your plastic gets a second life by:
  • Keeping it clean!  As a Smart Recycler, you’re careful to empty, rinse and recycle only those plastic items that manufacturers can use – bottles, jugs, jars and tubs. Avoid the “wish-cycling” trap: just because that fork or spoon is made of plastic, doesn’t mean it’s recyclable.
  • Driving demand. By choosing products made out of recycled content, we have the power to drive demand for more recycled feed stock. Check out the Buy Recycled Products Directory to find products made with recycled materials, which is known as post-consumer resin (PCR).
Plastic recycling is worth the effort as long as you follow the rules. If you can’t recycle it, consider not buying it and using an alternative (reusable bamboo forks and spoons for example).
Candy Kindness
My good news was our recent Easter Basket donations to families in need.
During a (Jans Towing & Recovery) company meeting, my staff decided to do a pay it forward day. After a brief discussion, we came up with the idea to pay it forward to the many local families that have been effected as a direct result of the economy and job loss. Knowing that the biggest struggle to parents is the loss of income, combined with the added stress of children home from school, we realized that Easter would also place a hardship when it came to the stay home order issued and the need to shop for Easter.

So, we put our heads together and decided to make 100 Easter Baskets, complete with chocolate bunny, filled eggs, candy and stickers or coloring books – and donate them to any family in need – at no cost! We were able to reserve an Easter Bunny costume to have the Easter Bunny available to help give out baskets. The local Shane Gives Thanks Food Pantry in Carver heard about our efforts, and donated 100 egg coloring kits to hand out also! We chose Friday, April 10th as our give away day. We posted online in the Whitman Hub about our donations and asked that any family in need reach out to reserve a basket that could be picked up or delivered.

Within the first 3 hours, we reserved 90 baskets. Realizing that the need was greater than the 100 baskets we had originally intended on making, we then headed out to make an additional 75 baskets! Our event concluded with 175 baskets picked up and 27 additional baskets delivered by our Easter Bunny!!

Our event even got the attention of the Channel 5 crew who sent a photographer and we were featured on their segment 5 for good on 5!! And we had several local businesses that came out to thank us for stepping up to support the local community!!

Family.
"Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city."
~ George Burns

"What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family."
~ Mother Teresa

"In truth a family is what you make it. It is made strong, not by number of heads counted at the dinner table, but by the rituals you help family members create, by the memories you share, by the commitment of time, caring, and love you show to one another, and by the hopes for the future you have as individuals and as a unit." ~ Marge Kennedy

"There's only one thing more precious than our time and that's what we spend it on." ~Leo Christopher
Celebrating our families. My favorite is Erma Bombeck:
“The family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another's desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.”
Have a great week : ) ~ Jacquie
