Bird Guide

Birds are busy flying around eating summer berries, and looking for insects.  Print this field guide from Molly of Denali, and use it as you look for birds in your yard or neighborhood. Did you find birds not on Molly’s list? Maybe you could draw a picture of some of those birds.

Ice Cream
When the weather is still warm, our thoughts turn to ice cream! Look at this ice cream recipe from America’s Test Kitchen Kids – Young Chefs’ Club. No ice cream maker is needed – just a blender. You will need adult help to gather supplies, use the blender, and set it in the freezer. Check out the variations – maybe try peanut butter flavor?
Scavenger Hunt
The end of summer can be a good time to go outside for a scavenger hunt. Ask an adult to take you on a walk around your neighborhood or a park. Print this scavenger hunt sheet from Daniel Tiger and check off each item as you find it. How many things did you find?
Back to School Checklist
Many students will begin heading back to school in a week or two. New routines and schedules will soon be in place as school begins. Start now to plan what you need to do for September. Here is a PBS Kids back-to-school checklist to help you get started.

Parents
The re-opening of some childcare centers and schools has parents both ecstatic and anxious. If your child is excited to go back to his program, worries about separation may not be an issue. But this significant shift may be challenging for children who are slower-to-warm-up by nature and have a harder time with transitions.  Visit this PBS Parents Transition Back to School article for suggestions to help your child make the transition.
