Theme: Corn Moon
Welcome to family activities with PBS Kids! September is the Harvest or Corn Moon. This name is attributed to Native Americans because it marked when corn was supposed to be harvested. Try several moon-themed activities below.
Two age level areas are available – PreK-K and Grades 1-2.
PreK-K
Explore the changing shape of the moon for seven days. Use the printable Observation Journal from Ready Jet Go, to track and record what you see. Later, make your own moon craters with a bowl of flour, cocoa, and small pebbles.

       Curious George Monkey Blast Off
Go to the moon with Curious George! This activity sheet provides three rockets with instructions. All you need are wide and thin straws, scissors, paper clip and tape. Ask you friends to join you and see which rocket flies the farthest.

Grades 1-2
Moon Landing Game – The Right Stuff
This September celebrate a fall moon, by playing this Ready Jet Go moon game. Begin by printing the instructions, cards and playing board. Then assemble the parts, and invite some friends to play.
    Engineer a Rocket Ship
Build a rocket ship to take a moon voyage. Using paper and string, create a pulley system that sends your gliding rocket ship soaring through space. Supplies are simple – card stock, tape, straw, string, and 2 beads. Print and cut put the rocket ship and begin your project.

Corn Muffins
Make a batch of tasty corn muffins to celebrate the September Corn Moon. You will need adult help gathering the ingredients and using the oven. Look for fine ground, whole-grain yellow cornmeal at the store. When cooled, spread these corn muffins with a little butter and jam for a special breakfast or snack.
